Atlanta-based New Birth Missionary Baptist Church recently renovated its $50 million, 7,500-seat sanctuary and opened a sister church in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Design team chose EAW® loudspeakers to fulfill the demand for state-of-the-art sound systems. Chief Engineer Mitch Donner and Production Manager Melvin Wood led the church's own production team in the design and installation of the entire system with the assistance from Roy Drukenmiller of Rock "N" Road and EAW Southeastern Representative, Quest Marketing's' Jim Greene.
"We have had good success with EAW in many of the systems we've done for the church," notes Donner. "We've looked at other loudspeaker options, and nothing really compares to the performance we get from the EAW speakers, especially for a building of this size."
The P.A. system in the Atlanta arena-style location consists of three EAW KF760 Long-Throw Line Array Modules and four EAW KF761 Short Throw Line-Array Modules in a flown line array on both sides of the stage, with three KF760s and four KF761s for the center array, completing an L-C-R main P.A. system. There are sixteen EAW SB1000z Large Format Subwoofers placed eight per side. Donner chose six EAW JF80z Compact Full-Range Loudspeakers for the front fill and 22 EAW UB82 Near-field Loudspeakers for under-balcony fills. Five EAW KF737 High-Q Line Array Modules handle out-fills. In the choir area, four EAW KF730 Compact Line Array Modules hang from the ceiling, and four EAW KF650z Compact Array Loudspeakers are used as side-fills, two per side.
The 2,500-seat Charlotte church facility presented architectural construction issues that compelled a modification to the sound system design. Structural changes meant that certain speakers had to hang lower than originally planned. However, thanks to the flexibility of EAW loudspeakers, the church was able to use all of the original sound system design components. The church's L-C-R arrays use eighteen KF730s and six EAW SB730 Compact Line Array Subwoofers with three SB1000z subwoofers on the floor for added low end support. Six JF50z compact loudspeakers are built in to the stage edge for front fills and six JF80z loudspeakers address the under-balcony fill.
In Charlotte, the EAW DX8 DSP Digital Matrix Mixer and DX810 DSP-based digital audio mixer and signal processors are integrated into the system, as is the EAW UX8800 Digital Signal Processor with EAW Focusing technology, assuring a perfectly tuned system. Says Donner, "EAW always delivers and we're very pleased with that."

The official cheering club of South Korean soccer, "The Red Devils," named Seoul's COEX Mall as its official 2010 FIFA World Cup cheer venue. To accommodate the 100,000+ fans, Seoul officials closed off The COEX to automobile traffic and installed LED screens, stages and sound systems. Despite the inner-city venue's challenges, crowds enjoyed great sound, thanks to EAW®'s critically acclaimed KF740 and KF760 loudspeakers systems.
Elan Korea and TFOS Plus, two leading touring companies in Korea, called upon Chung-Bo Sound Inc., EAW's Korean distributor, to provide sound for the event. "EAW was used on two of the three stages. We needed to provide an incredibly high-output system that could intelligibly broadcast play-by-play action to the sea of red-faced fans," stated Hyungjoon Jee, General Manager for Chung-Bo Sound. "These EAW units delivered beautifully."
To meet the demands, TFOS Plus used EAW's new KF740, eight per side, all powered by EAW's UX8800 Digital Processor. Elan Korea, on another stage, deployed an EAW KF760 line array rig consisting of eight KF760's per side (left and right) and six EAW BH760 Bent Horn Subwoofers per side (left and right). They also used two EAW KF730's for center fill and 10 EAW SM84's as monitors, all powered by 12 Lab.gruppen FP1000Q's.
"Everyone doesn't just watch the game on TV at home. They go out to the streets to support their teams as a family," remarked Jee. "The attendees deserve great sound, and we are happy to service them with great EAW loudspeakers. Both Elan Korea and TFOS Plus are great fans of EAW and agree that the equipment is very easy to set-up, especially the KF740."

The World Cup has put South Africa high on the world's must-watch list, and the capital city's nightclub scene is up to the task, thanks to the VDP Group's club designs and great sound from EAW®'s incredible Avalon Series. The newest jewel in VDP's global crown is Clapham Gold, which opened earlier this year in Johannesburg. The sound system, designed and installed by Johannesburg-based Surgesound, is the fourth of VDP's South African locations to use the same Avalon Series components in the same system configuration. Other VDP Clubs include the Manhattan Club in Johannesburg and the Clapham Grand in Durban.
The sound system consists of four EAW Avalon Series DCS2 Bent Horn Dance Subwoofers and four Avalon Series DC4 Medium-Format Dance Club Loudspeakers in the dance floor area, powered by Lab.gruppen C-Series and FP+ Series amplifiers with all processing handled by EAW's UX8800. Four CIS400 Ceiling Loudspeakers serve the club's reception area, and four Avalon Series SMS5 Surface Mount Loudspeakers provide sound for the outdoor bar are and are controlled by a EAW UX8800 Digital Signal Processor with proprietary EAW Focusing technology.
Andrew Rowan, Founder of Surgesound, says the EAW Avalon series components have provided consistently exceptional performance at all of the VDP venues. "We are happy with the way the system has performed in all the clubs," he states. "The system in this configuration, used in Clapham Gold, has become a standard in most VDP Group venues. The Clapham Gold is the fourth venue from the Group to employ this setup. It's a powerful, reliable and sophisticated system that delivers on its promise superbly."
Guy Baranyay of VDP noted, "The EAW system is performing magnificently. Within the club environment it is generally very difficult to attain the utopia of soul shaking power on the dance floor combined with quality/fidelity of sound in the more social areas of the club. It's incredible to see the EAW system meet this ideal. It's very pleasing to see customers talking to one another with ease around the bars and tables before shouting out the latest tunes on the dance floor moments later."
Not surprisingly, the EAW Avalon Series has been a hit everywhere it's been implemented. Numerous groundbreaking EAW technologies form the core of the series, including advanced horn and phase-plug technologies found in the flagship KF700 Series line of concert loudspeakers. Another technique employed to great effect is Tuned Dipolar Array (TDA), which provides the most focus control of low-frequency energy devised to this point.
EAW today announced strategic partnerships with Lake, Lab.gruppen, and Powersoft whereby all manufacturers will integrate proprietary EAW DSP algorithms into a subset of their respective product lines. Additionally, in Q3, 2010, Lake, Lab.gruppen, and Powersoft will announce separate agreements expanding the partnership to enable EAW to sell a selection of their respective product lines as components in EAW system sales.
"At the onset, the integration of EAW's lauded DSP, most notably Focusing™, will ensure seamless integration and optimum performance of EAW loudspeaker systems matched with Lake Processors, Lab.gruppen Powered Loudspeaker Management™ (PLM™) systems, and Powersoft amplifiers," commented Jeffrey Cox, LOUD Technologies' Pro Audio Group VP. "And once the sales component of the partnership is implemented, EAW will proudly offer a range of amplifier solutions from the best in the business," added Cox.
"An EAW and Powersoft relationship is a natural," explained Thomas Mittelmann, Powersoft Business Development Manager. "We stand fully behind it because it's truly market-driven and will reward the trade with specifically tailored system solutions. And once we finalize the sales component of the relationship, the trade will be rewarded with even broader access to Powersoft amplification in EAW system sales," added Mittelmann.
Klas Dalbjorn, Lab.gruppen and Lake Product Research Manager, explained, "We strive to make our processing solutions the easy choice in professional sound reinforcement and we are happy to have reached this agreement that allows us to support EAW grey box files with Focusing in our PLM Series and Lake Processing products."
"Additionally, Lab.gruppen and EAW are working to expand the relationship to allow EAW access to Lab.gruppen products in providing complete system solutions; expect a market announcement on this expanded partnership during the 3rd quarter," said Michael Munch, Lab.gruppen's VP of Strategic Product Management.
The companies expect the EAW DSP integration to be complete in Q3, 2010.

EAW announces the launch of the SB2001 Subwoofer. The dual 21-inch cone driver represents a very noteworthy upgrade to the SB1001 in terms of output capability and low frequency extension (17% larger voice coils, 59% greater Xmax and more than double the volume of air displaced) without a significant increase in size. The stunning result is a new and more powerful workhorse that has greater impact, power handling and output capability than its celebrated brethren.
"The pro audio market has seen a recent return of larger format subwoofers - most of which are very expensive and often esoteric, with limited application flexibility," remarked Nathan Butler, EAW Principal Engineer. "The SB2001 goes lower, gets louder and moves more air - which is a remarkable value, given the cost."
The unique driver mounting of the SB2001 maximizes cone area and allows for the integration of an extremely low turbulence port while minimizing frontal area, providing the acoustical performance and physical configuration well suited for creating large subwoofer arrays. This benefit is largely derived from the unique V-shaped baffle loading of the transducers. The nearly opposing devices force all of their combined output through an opening that is somewhat smaller than their collective cone size. This compression of energy through a smaller aperture results in phenomenal impact and rewarding growl.
The enclosure design integrates 3/8-16 suspension points for installation applications and is fully prepped and ready to receive the user installable quick release rigging kit accessory for touring applications. The SB2001 is noted for its tremendous punch given its small size (33.5" W x 22.63" H x 45.0" D; weight: 200 lbs) and is perfectly suited for a wide range of applications including concert touring, arenas, houses of worship, large auditoriums, theaters and large dance clubs. As always, optimized processor settings for the UX8800 Digital Signal Processor are available for download at www.eaw.com.
Today, EAW unveils the NTS250 Powered Subwoofer. The NTS250 is designed to serve as a companion subwoofer for any EAW system (and those of several competitors), but, as the product name suggests, it is an obvious choice to use in conjunction with the NTL720 compact line array. As such, this comprehensively integrated system is an ideal solution for sound reinforcement or fixed installation for corporate A/V, clubs, ballrooms, theaters, performing arts centers, houses of worship and more.
The NTS250 is a high output yet compact and lightweight premium subwoofer that unites the following features: a push-pull pair of high efficiency neodymium 15-inch woofers; 2000 Watts of amplification; powerful system optimization DSP and EAW Pilot software-accessible front-end DSP; the proprietary U-Net® audio and communications network; a professional rigging system; and push button two-box cardioid and hyper-cardioid configurability, all within a comprehensively integrated, RoadCoat-clad package.
The NTS250 is the first EAW subwoofer on the U-Net network, allowing for very simple system configuration with other U-Net enabled products. U-Net offers access to a plethora of monitoring and control features, as well as conventional front-end processing for system tuning - potentially obviating the need for external system controllers. The NTS250 is unique, as competitive subs are either not network capable or only offer an expensive network option.
The NTS250's native rigging solution allows the user to fly homogeneous arrays of the NTS250, and the addition of a simple, low-cost kit allows for the suspension of an NTL720 array beneath a subwoofer array. This simple two-box cardioid and hyper-cardioid configurability is an industry first.
Additionally, the network capability and EAW Pilot control software offer a much more substantial list of subwoofer array options that include larger cardioid and shotgun arrays, as well as large linear or two-dimensional arrays and possible user-configurable directivity.
The EAW NTS250 Powered Subwoofer is now shipping worldwide.

Today EAW launched the SB1001 Large-Format Dual-18-Inch-Loaded Subwoofer. The successor to EAW's legendary SB1000, the new SB1001 is essentially an SB1002 Large Format Flyable Subwoofer without the rigging hardware. The SB1001 is perfectly suited for a wide range of non-flying applications (with rigging hardware available as an optional separate product if desired), including concert touring, arenas, houses of worship, auditoriums/theaters, stage/drum fill monitoring, large dance clubs or any other application requiring articulate, powerful low end. While the dimensions of the SB1001's vented enclosure and the fundamental acoustical philosophy remain true to the classic SB1000, the core components are significantly enhanced to include larger 4.5-inch (115-mm) voice coils, 20% higher BI and all neodymium magnet structures. The result is a lighter-weight reference standard that has greater impact, power handling and output capabilities than its celebrated predecessor.
Jeffrey Cox, Vice President, Pro Audio Group, stated, "The SB1001 is a particularly strong, cost-effective solution for those who are not necessarily looking to fly their subwoofers. Rigging hardware is not included, which allows us to offer an outstanding price point unmatched by any other manufacturer. However, if rigging is desired, rigging assemblies are available as a separate product. The SB1001 adds the contemporary capability of high power and performance in the widely used and recognized EAW subwoofer format."
The unique driver mounting of the SB1001 maximizes cone area and allows for the integration of an extremely low-turbulence port while minimizing front area, providing the acoustical performance and physical configuration well suited for creating large subwoofer arrays. Two 18-inch drivers employ large (4.5-inch) voice coils, as well as powerful neodymium magnet structures that also reduce weight. The operating frequency range of the SB1001 is 27 Hz to 161 Hz (± 3 dB). Maximum sound pressure levels are 129 dB (average) and 135 dB (peak).
Dual Neutrik Speakon NL4 connectors are positioned on a rear-mounted section of the cabinet angled inward at approximately 45 degrees, allowing the SB1001 to position itself flush against walls in a groundstack configuration. Additionally, the SB1001 can be permanently suspended with sixteen 3/8" - 16 points and is fully prepped and ready to receive the user-installable quick release rigging kit accessory for touring applications. The rugged grille protecting the drivers matches that of the KF760 Series, while the cabinet is finished in a durable, wear-resistant textured black paint.
To optimize LF response, the SB1001 subwoofer is designed for use with EAW's critically acclaimed UX8800 dual-mode digital processor featuring revolutionary EAW Focusing Technology. As always, optimized processor settings for EAW's UX8800 Digital Signal Processor are available for download at www.eaw.com.

EAW was recently chosen as the loudspeaker of choice for a house-of-worship installation at CTMI Church in the town of Trianon, near Port Louis in the island nation of Mauritius. Durban, South Africa-based Northwind Recording provided the system design, analyzed the space's acoustics and performed the installation. EAW's South African distributor Surgesound supplied the equipment and managed all processing and system alignment. Further consultation was provided by EAW's Whitinsville, Massachusetts-based Application Support Group (ASG), under the management of Joe Fustolo.
EAW loudspeakers selected for the space included 15 EAW AX366 and AX344 Arrayable Install Loudspeakers, six EAW JF50S Compact Full-Range Loudspeakers, eight EAW SB1000z Large Format Subwoofers, five EAW MW12 MicroWedge Stage Monitors and two EAW UX8800 Digital Signal Processors. Amplification was provided by ten Lab.gruppen FP+ Series amplifiers and one Lab.gruppen PLM 10000Q Powered Loudspeaker Management System. The EAW AX Series models were arranged in a low-profile, aesthetically pleasing design in two arcs following the contour of the church. The JF50S units were used as lip fill. Four SB1000z subs were ground stacked, and the remaining four were flown, using different high pass filter (HPF), low pass filter (LPF) and delays to create a constant low frequency response throughout the church. The MicroWedge 12 monitors were spaced along the edge of the stage.
Northwind Recording principal Niklas Fairclough is a firm supporter of the EAW brand, having completed three previous installations in South Africa using EAW AX Series Arrayable Install Loudspeakers. Fairclough commented, "When we tested the system, we were blown away. With an SPL of 110 dB at the front-of-house position, the system sounded superb and very clean, and we still had massive headroom available."
Ruan Joubert from Surgesound, the Distributor of EAW in South Africa, was at the final stages of the installation to act as the System Engineer and represent EAW South Africa. After using Smaart to make fine-tune adjustments to the system, he commented, "With the combination of detailed acoustic design, carefully planned EAW Model selections, the Pre-Install Planning and system design with help of EAW ASG, everything came together, culminating in very a successful project with outstanding audio performance, which exceeded all the client's expectations."

Hailing from one of the nation's most vital music scenes, the Seattle area's audio professionals know great sound; even still, consensus is sometimes hard to come by. That is why it is of particular note that the NTL720 Line Array Loudspeaker System from EAW, a world leader in audio system solutions for the past 30 years, has quickly - but not quietly - become the reference standard for the greater Pacific Northwest. The self-powered, true three-way NTL720 features numerous EAW-patented and proprietary technologies, all housed in an extremely compact package, and it has become the new favorite in the region thanks to its great sound, high reliability, exceptional flexibility and its good-sense economics. Leading regional S.R. providers including Carlson Audio Systems, Audio Media, Inc. and Triamp Group have all found the EAW NTL720 lives up to their expectations.
"The NTL720 is possibly the most versatile box we've ever had," comments Mark Carlson, who, with partner Jonathan Stoverud-Meyers, built Seattle-based Carlson Audio from its beginnings in a garage 20 years ago, to the region's largest sound reinforcement provider, regularly handling sound for major festivals including Bumbershoot: Seattle's Music & Arts Festival and the Sasquatch Festival at the Gorge in George, Washington. "The 720 is a compact box that we can use for small and mid-sized venues like hotel ballrooms, and it's becoming popular for house-of-worship installations" - Carlson Audio has installed the NTL720 in two Seattle-area churches since purchasing 20 boxes last October - "but it can also extend the reach of our existing EAW systems." That's how they've used the NTL720 at recent outdoor venues, such as the KWJZ Music Festival at Château Ste. Michelle in Woodinville, Washington, and at the Sasquatch Festival, where the 720 was arrayed for offstage coverage in conjunction with the company's EAW 761 Line Array system. "There's nothing else out there that can take in the 100-plus-degree coverage angle," Carlson explains, noting that in one instance it took the 100 degrees of coverage of the main P.A. to a full 180 degrees. "It's got very predictable coverage, it's self-powered so it's easy to set up and it sounds great. It's a great asset for our inventory."
Audio Media, Inc. is a Seattle-based P.A. provider specializing in the corporate and award-show market categories throughout the region. Audio Media has done work for major area clients including Microsoft, Boeing and the Bellevue Symphony. The NTL720 was Audio Media's introduction to EAW P.A. technology, and company President Steve Midkiff is duly impressed. "When we did a comparison of what was out there in this type of box, the 720 was simply the best package at the best price and with fabulous sound," he says. Audio Media purchased 16 NTL720 boxes and bought additional bumpers because, Midkiff explains, some corporate events require more than two clusters to maintain speech intelligibility as well as serve music properly. And in a unique twist, both Audio Media and Carlson Audio coordinated their NTL720 purchases so that they would be able to support each other if one or the other needed additional boxes. "We've already had a few instances where we have cross-rented with Carlson, and it's been working out very well," says Midkiff.
The Seattle-area-based Triamp Group is another early NTL720 adopter who has had great experiences with the system. An NTL720 they installed at the Wildhorse Casino in Pendleton, Oregon, consists of six 720 boxes flown per side and augmented with four ground-stacked EAW SB1000z Large Format Subwoofers and two EAW VR62 Compact Full-Range Loudspeakers used as delay speakers, played 60 feet back in the 120-foot hall. The new system had its debut earlier this year with Frank Sinatra, Jr. and his orchestra, followed not long after by Poison front man Bret Michaels. "The sound was amazing for both performers, which really shows how versatile the NTL720 is," says Kevin Hill, National Sales Manager for Triamp Group. "We chose it because of the enclosure's low profile, which made it a great fit in a room this size, which holds about 900 people. Bret's band reached between 115 and 120 dB during rehearsal, measured from the front rows, and I didn't think the system would be able to handle it, but it not only kept up but also sounded great doing so. The drivers are very efficient, so it still sounds pristine even when it's being pushed. It's just a great sound system."

The 7th Annual Club World Award winners have been announced and among the winners is Ruby Skye, who took home a “Disco Globe” for Best Club. The beautiful 15,000 sq. foot club, housed in a converted Victorian style theater in the heart of San Francisco, routinely hosts world class DJs and has been nominated by Dancestar as one of the top five nightclubs. The one-of-a-kind sound system is based on the EAW's Avalon Series and was designed and installed by JK Sound's Mike Lacina. In order to further enhance the already impressive output of the Avalon system, EAW worked with Lacina to customize Ruby Skye's Avalon DC1 boxes with components found in some of the higher output touring systems such as the EAW KF Series. The resulting system utilizes over 30 customized and standard Avalon products and offers up crystal-clear, even coverage with outstanding amounts of body-shaking bass. In addition to winning the coveted “Best Club” award, Ruby Skye was awarded the “Disco Globe” for “Best Sound” in 2006. Congratulations, Ruby Skye! Keep on rockin!
Earlier this week, the finalists for the System Contractor News and InfoComm International 2009 Installation Product Award finalists were revealed and EAW's commercial line of SMS Series Surface Mount Loudspeakers are among the contenders in the "Most Innovative Loudspeaker for Commercial Installation" category. Product Manager, Dave Raneses stated that, "By utilizing our years of experience in the design and manufacturing of large format loudspeakers, we were able to create a family of small format solutions with the wavefront coherency, exceptional pattern control, and directional performance that is often needed in commercial installations. We're honored to be nominated." The SMS Series loudspeakers apply EAW's proprietary Theta Technology, which utilizes tuned driver spacing to create LF pattern control by placing pairs of smaller woofers symmetrically around the HF subsystem. The spaced woofers maintain pattern control into the LF range, complementing the wide-by-narrow coverage delivered by the HF subsystems. Vote Now!
EAW’s UX8800, with its highly advanced Gunness™ Focusing technology and advanced U-Net system networking, provides flawless loudspeaker and system control for the legendary after-party. The broadcast of the 81st Academy Awards on February 22, 2009, saw OSCAR'S® awarded for outstanding sound achievements in film, but there was one more outstanding audio accomplishment that evening: at the famous Governor’s Ball after-party, where the EAW UX8800 Digital Signal Processor optimized the sound system in the Grand Ballroom on the top level of the Hollywood & Highland Center. The sound system was provided and operated by Goodman Audio Services of Santa Fe Springs, California, a leading sound reinforcement company specializing in complex corporate and event audio systems. For the Governor’s Ball, Goodman Audio positioned two UX8800s as system processors at the Front-of-House (FOH) position. Signal from the Yamaha PM5D FOH mixer fed the UX8800 processors in loudspeaker mode, paired with various speaker/amplifier rack locations such as catwalks and amp world near the stage. A typical amp rack will have one UX8800 and four QSC PL236 amplifiers, and these were configured as left and right, with additional channels for dance floor, front fill, under stage, balcony feeds, subs and seven zones of delay. Thanks to the combination of the UX8800 and U-Net, all of the connections between the components are done via a single CAT-5e cable. “We couldn't live without the UX8800 on this event,” commented Rob Smoot, Senior Account Executive with Goodman Audio Services. “Being able to control a web of speakers spread out over a venue with only CAT-5 is unbelievable. The U-Net has allowed us to replace a ton of other pieces of equipment, like 12- and 24-pair mults and snakes, and run all the signals over just one CAT-5 line for all audio tie lines, drive lines and mults.” Goodman Audio is using a wide array of EAW speakers on the project, including an EAW JF Series two-way full range system in a vented trapezoidal enclosure, an EAW JF two-way full range system with passive LF/HF crossover in a vented trapezoidal enclosure, and a SB528z 2x18-inch direct radiating, high output, large-format subwoofer system. Smoot notes that the UX8800’s Gunness™ Focusing technology can take even very good speakers from other manufacturers and make them sound absolutely phenomenal. “It can take any combination and make them into a perfectly matched system,” he says, adding that the UX8800 has been the company’s sole loudspeaker and system processor since they acquired their first units in 2006. They now have a dozen. Of those, seven are being used at the Ball. Trace Goodman, Owner and President of Goodman Audio Services, says the ability to route to and communicate with any of the UX8800s on the system takes the entire system performance to a higher level. “From the FOH position, or while using a wireless tablet from the floor, I can access any individual processor and fine-tune it to further optimize the system,” he explains. “The precision control the UX8800 gives you really adds value to the sound system it’s used with.”
Extremely popular Austrian folk music band Lechner Buam recently chose to purchase a new system headed by EAW NT Series self-powered loudspeakers to utilize for sound reinforcement at all of their public performances - up to 70 concerts a year. The new rig was recently used at two distinctly different events by the band, with similarly excellent results.
The first event was a concert for more than 3,000 in a huge hall, while the second event, marking the band's 25th anniversary, was held in a tent with about 1,500 in attendance. EAW's distributor for Austria, SAC Schneider Audio Concept Vertriebs, headed by Christian Muhm, worked closely with the band on the new system, including providing NT Series systems for live evaluations that confirmed the band's decision to make the upgrade. Specifically, the band utilizes 2 x NT59, 2 x NT56 and 4 x NTS22 subwoofers.
"We're so happy - we've been searching for just such a PA over many years," states Willi Grafeneder, the band's leader. "Every instrument and the vocals are so clear, exact and transparent. It's amazing that these small and lightweight speakers bring such a punchy, fresh, and airy sound. And, this is achieved with no laborious DSP programming and EQing for different environments - just plug and play. The sound - from the front to the back - is always the same, and since we've starting using the system, no audience has argued that sound is either too loud or too low."
The Solar Stage for the upcoming 2008 Vans Warped Tour, scheduled for at least 46 dates starting later in June through August, will feature a concert sound reinforcement system featuring EAW KF730 Series line arrays and other premium EAW components.
We'll have more news regarding this exciting development posted here soon, but in the meantime, this 14th edition of the tour will feature performances by more than 100 top artists - Paramore, Gym Class Heroes, Jack's Mannequin, Against Me!, Pennywise, Reel Big Fish, Cobra Starship, Every Time I Die, Angels and Airwaves, Aggrolites, As I Lay Dying, the All-American Rejects, and the Academy Is... among many others.
Click here for the current slate of artists, and go here for the current Vans Warped Tour '08 schedule. Last year's tour sold 622,467 tickets to 45 shows, under the direction of tour founder and producer Kevin Lyman of 4fini Productions.
Located on the campus of Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, Cameron Indoor Stadium benefits both the Blue Devils men’s and women’s NCAA basketball teams with intimate seating that includes bleacher-style seats along the court reserved for students. In fact, it’s cultivated such a rich heritage that Sports Illustrated magazine ranks it number four on a list of the world’s most prestigious sporting venues.
Opening in 1940 with a capacity of 7,000, some minor renovations have occurred over the decades, most notably in 1988, when a new electronic scoreboard, new sound system and decorative wood paneling gave Cameron an updated look, with seating capacity increased to 9,314.
Yet the university’s mission remains to steadfastly maintain the venue’s original charm and elegance. Against this backdrop, SPL Integrated Solutions (SPL IS) of Columbia, Maryland, was invited in mid-2007 to submit ideas for a new arena-wide sound reinforcement system to the university’s facilities management and athletic departments as part of another subtle renovation phase.
Justo Gutierrez of SPL IS took the lead in evolving discussions regarding the new system, and as a Duke alumnus, he brought valuable context and insight to the specific requirements of the project. (Justo and Mike Moats of SPL are shown at right.)
Following a site survey, SPL IS offered some preliminary recommendations which were accepted. All parties strongly favored a distributed approach, due in part to a relatively low ceiling height and a strong desire not to impact the arena’s classic look, in addition to the dramatic performance gains that can be realized with proper deployment.

This year - 2008 - marks EAW's 30th anniversary. It's been a fun and certainly never boring ride, and one that continues apace.
Starting with a humble loudspeaker operation in Massachusetts in 1978, co-founders Kenton Forsythe and Ken Berger steadily built a global force in sound reinforcement.
Three decades later, Kenton "keeps on keepin' on" as the heart and soul of the EAW Engineering department, a group that has consistently turned out some of the most innovative technologies and product designs in professional audio - most recently exemplified by the NTL720 small self-powered line array, UX8800 digital processor, and many others. (Kenton's pictured at right.)
Now under the LOUD Technologies banner, EAW continues to further the exciting future of professional audio, under the direction of EAW Brand Group Vice President Jeffrey Cox. And the synergetic relationship with LOUD has contributed mightily to the development of products that expand EAW's reach, such as the recently released UMX.96 digital console.
We'll be presenting more of the history of EAW since its founding in 1978 as the year progresses, but in the meantime, start with these resources for a good overview of the EAW story: Who We Are, What We Do, Milestones, and Technologies.

The upcoming U.S. concert tour by legendary rock band Foreigner will feature veteran engineer Don “Dodger” Dodge providing his mix exclusively with an EAW UMX.96 digital console, revisiting the highly successful formula employed during the band’s 2007-08 world concert tour.
“Things could not have gone better with the UMX.96 console during the dozens of shows we did all over the world last year,” states Dodge. “I had previously not been a fan of digital boards, but the UMX is so good that it erased that viewpoint.
"There’s a very analog feel to the layout, and it quickly becomes an intuitive extension of the engineer’s goals for his mix,” he adds.
Foreigner kicks off its upcoming U.S. tour in California in late May, performing across the country for several months. In addition, Bryan Adams and his band are slated to join the tour as a featured act over the summer, where Dodge also expects to utilize the UMX.96.

EAW MicroWedge MW12 stage monitors were out in force at the recent Coachella Festival, the annual three-day music and arts celebration held in the desert region of Indio, CA, that this year featured more than 60 top musical artists on six stages.
Numerous MicroWedge MW12 monitors were deployed at the Outdoor Theatre, which hosted a wide range of live rock and related music performances, as well as at the Sahara Tent, a dance venue. Rat Sound Systems of Oxnard, CA, the sound reinforcement supplier for the entire event, choose to utilize the MW12's to meet monitoring and related requirements at both venues.
The EAW UMX.96 digital console has officially landed, with three distributors in Europe taking delivery of fully tested and approved production models.
In addition, orders from several distributors in the Asian pro audio marketplace are being fulfilled as well. (UMX.96 Product Manager Martyn "Ferrit" Rowe is shown at left with consoles being readied for shipment.)
Final assembly of every UMX.96 is done at the Woodinville, WA facilities, along with exhaustive inspection, testing and verification. This is a “fine-toothed comb” process where every single component, and then the console as a whole, is addressed by the production team.
Highlights include a 72-hour static "burn-in" period, followed by a visit to the facility’s environmental chamber, where each UMX.96 runs continuous for 48 hours while being cycled through a range of thermal cycles. Further, every PC board is removed and examined via a precision “Micro-Vu” video inspection system, with boards only put back into place after passing this rigorous test.
”A final set of tests are performed on every input and output, as well as every DSP function,” adds Ferrit. “The consoles also must pass our own critical listening tests before we consider them suitable for our customers. The overall process calls to mind a ‘hand-built Ferrari’ approach.” (This news first broke as an exclusive in this month's Pro Sound News Europe magazine. Click here to read the full report.)
A new system featuring EAW KF730 Series line arrays and UX8800 digital processors with Gunness Focusing that was recently implemented for sound reinforcement at Centennial Hall on the campus of the University of Arizona in Tuscon is the subject of a major feature article in the current issue of Stage Directions magazine.
The article was authored by noted Steve Schull, a noted audio mixer and consultant who is now a member of the Theatre Department at SUNY Oswego. It details the demonstration and selection process involved with the new system, as well as the implementation of its A-list components. Arizona Pro Sound, owned by Mark Cowburn, worked with Centennial Hall personnel as well as UAPresents, the largest performing arts presenter in southern Arizona, in formulating and installing the system.

The 2008 Major League Baseball season kicked off in fine style with the grand opening of Nationals Park, the new 41,000-seat ballpark of the Washington, D.C. franchise that features high-octane venue-wide sound reinforcement led by an all-EAW loudspeaker lineup. The system was designed by Wrightson, Johnson, Haddon & Williams (WJHW) of Dallas, with Principal Ron Baker serving as lead designer. Tech Inc. of Latham, Maryland handled the fast-track installation, while the Columbia, Maryland office of AVI-SPL supplied custom engineering services.
As they’ve done with frequently with ballpark sound reinforcement projects, WJHW elected to deploy a distributed system, and in this case, it includes more than 450 full-range EAW loudspeakers, with the majority being compact, two-way members of the MK Series.
The MK Series has proven popular in numerous stadium and ballpark projects around the globe due to their quality sonic properties, durability, and compact footprint.
Most of the loudspeakers for Nationals Park are outfitted with either 12-inch or 15-inch woofers, although some MK Series enclosures with 8-inch woofers also proved fortuitous in regions dictating a particularly low profile.

The beautiful new Club Hotel in Thessaloniki, Greece, features a dynamic sound system headlined by EAW Avalon Series club loudspeakers courtesy of Eurosound S.A., EAW's distributor serving Greece.
The 500-square-meter nightclub features a wide range of entertainment as the newest premier nightspot in Thessaloniki (Θεσσαλονίκη), the second-largest city in Greece and the capital of Macedonia, the nation's largest region.
Already one of the most prestigious (and largest) venues in the city, Club Hotel features an all-EAW loudspeaker line-up to meet all sound reinforcement needs. The system is headlined by six Avalon DC2 larger-format full-range loudspeakers spaced throughout the club, joined by six more Avalon DC4 smaller-format full-range loudspeakers, with both models featuring cutaway upper-rear cabinet corners that allow them to tuck up next to the ceiling while being angled downward to provide optimum coverage.
Dual Avalon DCT1 supertweeter arrays (4 x 1.33-inch-exit tweeters) with an inverted pyramid configuration delivering optimized 360-degree horizontal high-frequency dispersion from centrally mounted locations. Low-frequency energy to fill out the sonic spectrum are supplied by six EAW SB1000zR dual-18-inch-loaded subwoofers. All loudspeakers are driven by Lab.gruppen amplifiers.
"The management of the club had first heard the EAW components in another club, and as a result of that dynamic demonstration of EAW quality, selected them for their own venue," notes Apostolos Kanakaris. (Our thanks to Eurosound for the excellent photos as well as the details in this report.)
A recent evaluation process highlights the dramatic performance gains that can be realized by utilizing recent EAW technologies to enhance an existing sound reinforcement system.
The evaluation took place at Crossway Baptist Church in Victoria, Australia, which hosts worship services and other activities in an 1,110-seat, fan-shaped auditorium. The current house sound reinforcement system, installed in 1995 and still going strong, features a pair of EAW KF650E three-way full-range loudspeakers installed per side above the edge of the front platform, with a single EAW SB1000E subwoofer per side on the floor.
Four EAW JFX200 compact loudspeakers along the front of the stage offer fill when needed, and they can also be utilized as spare stage monitor wedges (other monitoring is supplied by IEM systems). Additional front fill comes via four two-way loudspeakers mounted directly beneath the KF650E mains.
The system is under the direction of Media Pastor Peter MacLean, who is heading the evaluation process for possible upgrade of select components. Working closely with Production Audio Services Pty. Ltd., EAW’s distributor for the Australian pro audio marketplace, and also based in Victoria, a new EAW UX8800 digital processor was first implemented, in place of the system’s current digital processor. (Peter is shown at right in the above photo, with Graeme Stevenson and Ben Clarke of Production Audio Services.)

A Valentine’s Day concert at the venerable Orpheum Theater in downtown Los Angeles by Don Was and the Was (Not Was) band, featuring legendary performers Brian Wilson and Kris Kristofferson, proved an excellent occasion for the public debut of EAW’s brand-new MicroWedge Series stage monitors. Oxnard, CA-based Rat Sound Systems Inc. supplied the sound reinforcement systems and support under the direction of crew chief Tom Caraisco.
The big news in system-land was the first-time live concert deployment of the EAW MicroWedge MW12 stage wedges for all performers, fueled by monitor engineer Andy Turner’s mixes. The wedges were driven by a combination of Chevin and Lab.gruppen power amplifiers.
“We really, really like the performance of these new wedges,” notes Caraisco. “Once Andy got things going on stage, and we went through all of the mixes, he was genuinely pleased.”
“The old Microwedge was solid and performed well enough when compared to other wedges, but these new ones are night-and-day superior,” states Dave Rat. “This is a whole new deal. I knew the wedges were a big step forward, but what I did not expect was such an overwhelming embrace so quickly from our own engineers as well as the artists and band engineers."

EAW will be exhibiting in full force at the upcoming Prolight+Sound - Musikmesse show in Frankfurt, Germany, the international trade fair for event and communications technology, AV-production and entertainment.
Prolight+Sound runs from Wednesday, March 12 through Saturday, March 15, with EAW providing a full exhibit, located at Hall 8.0, booth M44/M48. Numerous EAW personnel from Europe and the U.S. will be on hand to discuss the wide range EAW and EAW Commercial products on display, including the brand-new SB1002 subwoofer, KF737 high-Q line array module, and MicroWedge MW12 stage monitor.
Also new will be several models in the EAW Commercial line, including SMS Series surface-mount loudspeakers, CAM Series mixer-amplifiers, CXA Series amplifiers, and CIS Series high-output ceiling loudspeakers. And, they all will be joined by the UMX.96 digital console, UX8800 digital processor and NTL720 self-powered "baby" line array.
The North Bondi RSL club in Sydney was definitely the place to be recently, with FOH Engineer Dave Coxon mixing the renowned Martini Club band as it worked the 2,500 (full) capacity turnout into a frenzy through the new EAW NTL720 (BLAM) self-powered "baby" line arrays that also feature revolutionary Gunness Focusing technology.
Coxon, of DJW Projects, says the heat coming off the dance floor was incredible and literally had water dripping off the walls. DJW Projects is a solution-based boutique service company based in Sydney, specializing in premium end, customized audio-visual design, install, and production.
Only four NTL720's per side were required to get the entire venue absolutely rocking. Amazingly pristine audio from self-powered loudspeakers that weigh under 22 kilograms (48 pounds) each!
Thanks very much to the team at Production Audio Services, and Brendan Phillips in particular, for this report and photos.

Yes, it was still "just" a concert gig, but we've got to admit - it sure is one with a bit of that extra cache. "It" is Super Bowl Saturday Night, the official National Football League celebration the night before the big game, held prior to this year's Super Bowl XLII in Phoenix at Tempe Town Lake, with thousands in attendance.
Sure, Earth Wind & Fire and other notable acts were on the bill. Sure, Jerry O'Connell was the host. Sure, there was a big fireworks show finale. But... the highlight (from our completely objective point of view) was the headline performance by Foreigner, mixed by the incomparable Don Dodge on the UMX.96 digital console. As its done over dozens of gigs around the world the past several months, the UMX.96 proved to be a superb tool in serving Don's needs in mixing Foreigner live.
"Things could not have gone better with the console, as usual," Don notes. "It's performance was fantastic, matching the stature of this high-profile show." And as EAW Business Director Jon Bosaw aptly points out: "It's not every team that makes the Super Bowl in its first year." (Thanks to Don for the photos of the board at the gig above. Don's shown with the UMX.96 at lower right.)

At the end of January, more than 300,000 descended upon Zocalo de la Ciudad de Mexico, the main square in Mexico City, to attend a rally regarding agricultural policies in Mexico - with leading sound company Consorcio Audiovisa S.A de C.V providing EAW KF730 Series line arrays as part of a comprehensive sound reinforcement package.
In fact, Consorcio Audiovisa of Mexico City - a member of ELAN and owned by Alejandro and José Luis Morales - deployed 56 EAW KF730 Series line array modules (driven by Crown I-Tech amplification) to serve six different regions/stages of the massive Zocalo area, including the four main streets leading to the square. Frontfill for one of the regions was supplied by EAW LA215 loudspeakers.
"We were able to attain great sound pressure levels throughout the square and its surrounding area, which was the primary goal," notes Alejandro Morales. Click here to see more of the system and event in photos supplied by Alejandro.

Leave it to the innovative Michael Lacina and his JK Sound team to come up with a clever way to utilize EAW KF761 large-format line array modules to deliver superb sound reinforcement in the intimate confines of a lounge setting.
The recent project, at the Cirque Lounge on Folsom Street in San Francisco, offered the particular challenge of fitting a powerful sound system into a low ceiling room with various beams diminishing the height even further.
Further, Scot Peterson, lighting designer for the project, was hoping the sound system's loudspeakers would not infringe on the symmetry of the 1,000-plus LED grid he was planning for the ceiling, while Craige Walters, the interior designer, was pushing for the loudspeakers to disappear into the sweeping curves of his design.
That’s when Lacina (pictured at left), in talking about the project with system integrator Brad Katz, shared an "epiphany": utilize EAW’s top of the line the KF761 line array module, burying four of them into the façade of the soffit that rings the dance floor. Then, hide the speakers behind a perforated metal grill.
The overall result: creation of an invisible monster of a system to serve Cirque Lounge patrons. Not surprisingly, JK Sound has been nominated for 2008 Club World Award for sound design at Slide Speakeasy in San Francisco, and this latest innovation is not at all likely to be overlooked when nomination time comes for next year's awards.

Leading club systems provider Ohm Productions recently provided expert audio, visual and lighting system design and installation for the Tattoo Bar, one of Washington D.C.’s newest nightspots located in the thriving K Street district.
Headed by Jeff Darby and based in nearby Potomac Falls, Virginia, Ohm Productions is recognized as the region’s “go to” nightclub and lounge systems resource for more than 15 years, consistently delivering superior designs that are expertly applied to fit and enhance the desired experiences of club owners and patrons alike. Recent projects include Lotus Lounge, FUR Nightclub and UltraBar – all among D.C.’s hottest of spots.
Tattoo Bar presents a decidedly “blue collar” ambiance, with the long narrow room (about 2,500 total square feet) taking on an industrial motif with a biker’s twist. In fact, a full-size steel sculpture of a motorcyclist bursts from the wall above the bar, while motorcycle chains are utilized as “hanging door bead” dividers.
“This venue is different from any other in the area, which makes it an exciting, fresh alternative,” Darby explains. “It’s got a gritty feel, and the music programming goes along with that – heavy on rock n’ roll tracks.”

Leading U.K. hire company Concert Sound just finished up providing a large-scale sound reinforcement system for the latest European concert tour by the legendary Joe Cocker, including extensive EAW line array and loudspeaker sets.
Concert Sound worked closely with FOH Engineer Chris Madden in formulating the system, which traveled throughout the European continent in support of the 2007 release of the acclaimed Hymn For My Soul album. The scalable system, under the care of System Engineer Dave Dixon, was comprised of left and right main hangs of up to 20 EAW KF760 Series large-format line array modules, with EAW KF730 Series small-format line array modules on the deck for front-fill.
Side-fill came from up to eight EAW KF750 Series three-way concert loudspeakers flown per side, with a low-frequency contingent of up to 18 EAW SB1000z dual-18-inch-loaded subwoofers split left and right. “I loved the consistency of this system – it sounded great every day throughout the 13-week tour, performing in a widely differing variety of venues,” noted Madden. “The system also provided very fast load-ins and load-outs, and further, it didn't suffer a single component failure during the whole tour.”
A portion of the system as well as key sound team members are pictured above. Left to right - Ben Byford, Adrian Fitzpatrick, Chris Madden, Niall Slevin, and Dave Dixon. And, thanks to Moray McMillan of EAW Europe for the great photos!
Stage Audio & Lighting Productions of Longwood, Florida, recently provided sound reinforcement and technical support at all venues for this year’s Florida International Festival in Daytona Beach, highlighted by a performance by the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO), featuring a concert system based upon a variety of EAW loudspeakers line arrays and EAW digital processing.
Headed by Phillip Kovacevich (pictured below), Stage Audio & Lighting Productions is a leading live event company celebrating its third decade of serving touring artists and corporate event planners in the Eastern U.S. and the Caribbean, and the company counts live orchestra sound reinforcement as one of its specialties.
Veteran free-lance audio professional Jeremy Goldstein, based in Orlando, brought his talents to the event as well. In addition to helping with system management throughout the festival, he also provided the live mix of the first half of the LSO concert.
The LSO show featured a “Pops” style that paid tribute to motion picture soundtracks, with “Darth Vadar” making an appearance to guest-conduct the “Star Wars” theme.
The large-scale system assembled to serve the audience filling the 46,000-square-foot, multi-level Ocean Center arena in Daytona included EAW KF760 Series large-format line arrays optimized with the new EAW UX8800 dual-mode digital processors with Gunness Focusing technology.

The campaign for the U.S. presidency kicked into high-octane mode last week as Oprah Winfrey joined Democratic candidate Barack Obama at Williams-Brice Football Stadium in Columbia, SC, where ACS Sound & Lighting delivered EAW-based sound reinforcement for the more than 30,000 people at the largest political rally in South Carolina history.
ACS Co-Owner Troy Gwin and his crew’s concert-level system effort was headed by EAW KF760 Series large-format line arrays joined by EAW KF730 Series small-format line arrays, with several EAW BH760 “SuperSubs” also on hand for pounding low-end for musical artists such as Arrested Development.
ACS, also based in Columbia, provided “in the round” coverage of the audience surrounding the main stage at one end of the stadium, with organizers adamant that the PA stay out of crowd and TV camera sightlines.
The KF760 line arrays and BH760 subs were transported down to field level from the stadium scoreboard, supplied by ACS through the 2007 football season to deliver reinforcement at University of South Carolina Gamecocks home games. They were joined by KF730 Series line array inventory, with Gwin utilizing the EAW Wizard software program to help with initial system configuration and then doing his own detailed tailoring.

Noted harpist Vincenzo Zitello, recognized as one of the finest Italian musical artists, performs live in concert with sound reinforcement by EAW NT Series self-powered loudspeakers with Gunness Focusing.
Also widely respected for his skills as a composer, Zitello's compositions have often been played in Saint Peter’s Square in Rome to accompany special worship services.
For live performances, Zitello utilizes his own custom sound reinforcement system that even includes special microphones installed in his harps, along with several premium Neumann overhead mics.
The system, under the direction of Vittorio Sorrentino, Zitello's sound engineer, is led by NT26 loudspeakers, sometimes joined by NTS22 subwoofers. Sorrentino (pictured below) selected the NT Series following an evaluation of numerous loudspeakers.
"The EAW NT26's are very high quality loudspeakers, and are the only ones that can reproduce the unique sound of the harp with all the harmonics and the complete dynamic range, without any coloration or distortion," explains Sorrentino. "We use two or four NT26, depending on the venue size. They are coupled with NTS22 subwoofers when Vincenzo performs with other musicians.”
In January, 2008, Zitello will be performing at Théâtre Max Jacob in Bretagna-France, a high award for an Italian artist to play Breton music in its homeland. (To learn more about Vincenzo Zitello, click here. Our thanks to Edoardo Ravelli of Exhibo for this information and the photos.)
Leading hire company Canegreen of London recently deployed its EAW KF760 Series line array inventory for a series of events at London's ExCel Arena, the largest indoor arena venue in the U.K.
The multi-day event series included a live festival for Islam television, followed by Tamil Remembrance Day and then the two-day Nigerian Festival of Life, with attendance sometimes approaching 30,000.
Canegreen was able to achieve excellent sound reinforcement with a main system headed by left and right line array hangs comprised of 10 KF760 modules above two KF761 wide-dispersion modules, and a dozen SB1000z subwoofers on the deck.
Renowned FOH Engineer Roger Lindsay provided the house mix for all three events (as he did last year), with Canegreen's Paul "PK" Knight and Ace McGrogan on hand throughout to provide expert system engineering and technical support. (Roger, PK and Ace are pictured directly above, left to right.)
The accolades keep on coming for the UMX.96 digital console as it continues its tour with FOH Engineer Don Dodge in support of Foreigner's international tour.
The latest notice comes from Audio Pro International magazine, based in the U.K., which is featuring an exclusive interview with Don on his experiences with the UMX. Sample comment from Don: "The console has a ‘warmer’ sound to it than others, with analog pre amps and VCA section and a very analog layout.”
Be sure to check out the entire interview here.
The new NTL720 is one of the most exciting products developed by EAW in some time. It's a self-powered line array loudspeaker system so small that we call it the "baby line array module" (BLAM), but it packs a true three-way design and numerous other EAW patented and proprietary technologies into its very small footprint. The NTL720 made its live debut at the recent 2007 ET Live in Orlando - click here to check out photos of it in action.

At the recent 2007 ET Live in Orlando, Dave Rat provided the live mix at the EAW stage on an EAW UMX.96 digital console. During a break, the folks at Mix magazine (Editorial Director Tom Kenny and Managing Editor Sarah Benzuly) stopped by to talk with Dave about his experiences this first time out with the board.
Dave notes right up front that overall, he's not too keen on the digital mixing format, still preferring analog. Yet he did find a lot to like about the UMX.96, topped by a demonstration of one of the board's more unique (and fun) features...
In part 2 of the interview, Dave discusses the new EAW MicroWedge line, providing some context as well as his reasons for working with EAW on this coming product series. Click here to go directly to the videos.
Leading UK hire company Concert Sound continues to keep its EAW KF760 Series line arrays very busy, as evidenced by the recent two-day “Live ‘07” show by the Scout Association of the UK at the new 20,000-seat O2 Arena inside the London Millennium Dome. The dynamic event featured a wide range of live entertainment, including a 20-piece band, 90-piece orchestra and 30-plus member choir. (More than 140 inputs were required.)
Concert Sound elected to go with a main concert system headed by several arrays of KF760 Series modules, also including KF761 wide-coverage modules to attain extended dispersion in nearfield regions. The arrays easily delivered superb full-range output to every seat in the large-scale arena.
Key system personnel working the event included Simon Wooler (FOH engineer), Matt Mannasse (orchestra engineer), Tim Peeling (system engineer) and Gary Sylvester (monitor engineer).
Concert Sound’s efforts at Live ’07 follows up their successful work with the Scout Association in support of the World Scout Jamboree this past summer, attended by more than 40,000 scouts from around the globe. ET Live 2007 in Orlando was a whole lot of fun, but it was also highly productive as well, as thousands turned out in the beautiful weather to get a first-hand look at the numerous EAW advancements in action.
The huge stage, with live performances by Led Zeppelin tribute band Physical Graffiti, featured the new NTL720 "baby" line array modules (BLAM) making a laudable debut. The output-to-size ratio of this exciting new self-powered loudspeaker product proved most impressive, as well as high vocal intelligibility in evidence both with musical programming as well as during introductory remarks by EAW Brand Group Vice President Jeffrey Cox.
Dave Rat (pictured left) was on hand to provide the mix on an EAW UMX.96 digital console, and he also saw the preliminary introduction of the first of the new EAW MicroWedge products in prototype form. (The new wedges and the console attracted quite the traffic at the house mix position.)
Meanwhile, new KF737 modules, bringing high-Q capabilities while fitting seamlessly within KF730 Series arrays, drew a wide range of rave reviews. Many in attendance also got their first look (and listen) at the new UX8800 digital processor with Gunness Focusing, utilized with the KF730 arrays. (The NTL720's have onboard DSP that includes Gunness Focusing.)
And, yet another debut came in the form of the new SB1002 subwoofer, featuring convenient flying capabilities and much more.
Filling out the system, which was under the highly capable direction of Howard Burke, were KF650z sidefills and SM12 stage monitors. Harry Brill Jr. ran Smaart throughout the event, with Smaart designated as the official measurement system for the entire event. Stage Audio & Lighting Productions of Longwood, Florida, headed by Phil Kovacevich, provided systems and on-site support throughout the event.

They're joined by an SB150P compact, 15-inch-loaded subwoofer that's flown centrally above the stage. Four EAW Commercial VRM12 stage monitors are also available.
We'll present more details regarding this interesting project here on Front Row in the very near future. Our thanks to Audio Geer for the preliminary information and great photos.
Performance Recording and Sound, founded by Marty Bilecki and based in the Chicago area, just finished up a very successful summer season in providing sound and support at a wide range of live concerts, festivals and events.
A member of EAW ELAN, Performance Sound has earned a reputation for quality equipment and personal service, serving local and national clients since 1991. The company’s A-Line live system is headed by up to 20 EAW KF730 Series small line array modules, and a bit earlier this year, the system was enhanced with the addition of new EAW UX8800 digital processing with Gunness Focusing. “All of the traveling engineers were impressed with the UX8800 processor and the 730 system,” notes Marty.
One highlight was providing sound for the Addision (Illinois) Community Days festival, which featured live performances by Eddie Money, .38 Special and Mickey Thomas of Starship. Images of the system for that gig, along with a picture of Marty, are shown above. Thanks to Marty and his team for providing these photos, and click here to find out more about Performance Sound.
A new performance audio system featuring EAW KF730 Series line arrays and UX8800 digital processing has gone live at Centennial Hall, home to UApresents, the largest performing arts presenter in southern Arizona.
The new system, implemented just in time for a 42-show 2007-08 season (kicked off by Dionne Warwick in concert), was designed and installed by Arizona Pro Sound of Tucson, working with key venue staff, including Operations Manager Gary Lotze.
The system includes KF730 line arrays, each with 11 modules, flown left and right, while eight SB730 subwoofers (in groups of four) on the stage deck. Six EAW JF80 compact loudspeakers provide frontfill. All loudspeakers are driven by Lab.gruppen FP7000 power amplifiers, with a UX8800 processor handling all DSP in addition to providing Gunness Focusing technology for absolute pristine sonic performance.

Attention all UX8800 users: a new version of EAWPilot software (v1.0.46.52) has been posted and is now available via the Downloads page here at EAW.com.
With this new version, the "Reset Input Channel Settings" dialog only comes up if the greybox selection is changed - not for amplifier or listening distance adjustments. Also, spin controls are fixed on both delay and greybox high-pass and low-pass filters (for real, this time), while disabled low-pass filters now have the frequency "greyed" out.
Further, compressor threshold handles are once again available in system mode, front panel setting changes now display correctly, and auto-assign works in several more scenarios. Click here to go directly to the Downloads page.
NOTE: Several of these fixes will only work if you update to firmware
build 52!

We're saddened to hear the news that Avalon Boston is closing its doors. The club, and of course, its owner John Lyons, were extremely instrumental in the development of EAW's landmark Avalon Series purpose-designed club loudspeakers. (Some of the original Avalon loudspeakers at the club are pictured at right.)
Based on design criteria developed by Lyons, the Avalon Series offers a fresh look at the balance of subsystems within a loudspeaker system. Techno-industrial dance music presents a relentless, pounding beat, so to address this issue, the Avalon line comprises bottom-heavy systems with double the number of woofers per system to deliver the beat as a physical concussion.
"We took a blank sheet of paper, began with technologies that we knew would be an excellent starting point, and then developed new ideas that would result in superior dance club loudspeakers," explains Jeff Rocha, EAW vice president of engineering. "The fact that a lot of meaningful input came from club professionals, and that the products were created and critically evaluated in real conditions at Avalon Boston, resulted in something special."

Last weekend (September 15, to be exact), Mexico celebrated its national independence day, and our friends at Consorcio Audiovisa S.A de C.V. of Mexico City were on hand to provide EAW KF730 Series line arrays as the primary components of a sound reinforcement system for a civic ceremony in Tlalnepantla, one of the most important cities in the state of Mexico.
More than 15,000 converged on Tlalnepantla's Plaza Cívica Dr. Gustavo Baz for the ceremony, which featured remarks by the city president as well as a host of traditional festivities. To provide coverage throughout the plaza, Consorcio Audiovisa, a member of ELAN and owned by Alex and José Luis Morales, supplied 24 KF730 modules as well as 16 EAW SB1000z subwoofers as the key aspects of the system, backed by full technical support.
All of these EAW loudspeakers were divided evenly into four groundstacked sets of six line array modules and four subwoofers, spaced equidistantly across the front of the plaza.
They were the exclusive source for all spoken-word presentations, and were also used to significantly bolster coverage for various musical performances, including Mariachi bands.
"Sound pressure levels generated by our system measured 105 dB at 60 meters," notes Alex Morales. "Overall, the results were amazing, with perfect coverage to every zone in the plaza."

Last week (September 9), Stock Audio & Light provided a high-end sound reinforcement system featuring dual EAW UX8800 digital processors in tandem with KF760 Series line arrays for a memorial concert by the Limburg Symphony Orchestra that marked the liberation of the Netherlands in World War II.
The concert, held on the grounds of the American Battle Cemetery and Memorial in Margraten, the Netherlands, was highlighted by a performance of Verdi’s Requiem, accompanied by the Vocal Collective, a 60-member choir from Belgium.
Stock Audio, based in Geleen, the Netherlands, worked with the concert’s front-of-house engineer, Jo Smeets, to assemble a system providing enough headroom to reach a coverage area spanning beyond 150 meters (approximately 500 feet), while also capable of presenting a very natural sonic signature.
The sound team responded with a main system featuring dual line arrays, each comprised of six EAW KF760 modules above two KF761 wide-dispersion modules, flown stage left and right.
Low-frequencies were reinforced with eight EAW LA400 subwoofers with bent horn technology, groundstacked in groups of four beneath the main arrays. All loudspeakers were driven with LabGruppen fp6400 power amplifiers, with a DiGiCo D1 serving as house console and a Midas XL4 for monitors, largely for pre-mixing string instruments.
Holland PA, EAW’s distributor for the region, supplied two EAW UX8800 digital processors with Gunness Focusing for evaluation with this system. During soundcheck the day prior to the concert, Stock Audio Owner Paul Pelen immediately noted the significant upgrade in sonic performance provided by the UX8800 units, and in fact, decided on the spot to purchase them.

Located on the western bank of the Mississippi River in downtown Minneapolis, the new Guthrie Theater is “a 21st century dream factory,” according to Time magazine. Primary performance spaces include the 1,100-seat Wurtele Thrust Stage, 700-seat McGuire Proscenium Stage and 250-seat Dowling Studio Stage, all supporting classic, modern and experimental productions in addition to live music concerts.
Resident Sound Designer/Supervisor Scott Edwards and Master Sound Technician Ross Anderson thoroughly embraced the opportunity to develop the entire facility’s audio constitution, supported by theater sound department staff companions Reid Rejsa, Paul Estby, Ryan Healey, and Montana Johnson, all working closely with technical and production personnel.
TALASKE of Chicago assisted with audio system and acoustical designs, the latter facet bolstered by Kahle Acoustics of Brussels, Belgium. Installation duties were awarded to local system integrator Electronic Design Company.
What resulted is a completely seamless building-wide audio and control infrastructure that ties all components and systems together as one in a manner beyond compare – in North America, at least. Further, in the case of the Wurtele and McGuire stages, the audio components and acoustics are meticulously integrated with their rooms, resulting in electronic sound reinforcement working so cohesively that the sonic signature is the very definition of natural.

New England-based SPL (Sound Plus Lighting) Systems recently added dual EAW UX8800 digital processors with Gunness Focusing, as well as 12 EAW KF730 small line array modules, to its live system inventory.
Based in Agawam, Massachusetts and headed by Bill Forbes, SPL Systems has been providing full production services for corporate events, fairs, festivals, and to event promoters throughout New England for more than a decade. The company also performs top-notch system installation and integration services. (Photo credit to SPL Systems for use of the photo at right.)
The UX8800 and KF730 line arrays join numerous other EAW models in the SPL Systems stable, including KF850z, LA400, UB2199-WP, FR129z, and JF80z.
Two major college football stadiums are starting the season in style with new sound reinforcement systems that both incorporate EAW KF900 Series high-output loudspeakers capable of delivering solid, tight, full-range coverage from scoreboard locations.
Further, one of the systems - recently implemented by All Pro Sound at Auburn University's 87,450-seat Jordan-Hare Stadium - features processing via six EAW UX8800 digital processors.
One UX8800 is connected by Ethernet, and one receives the analog audio feed, with both control and audio passed among the six processors via EAW U-Net. The KF900 Series cluster serving the stadium includes six KF930F, 12 KF920F, and 6 KF910F modules.
Meanwhlile, at brand-new 45,000-seat Bright House Networks Stadium on the campus of the University of Central Florida, SPL Integrated Systems has implemented a loudspeaker approach of 10 KF920F, four KF910F, four KF914F and two KF913F, joined by six BH2313 and four KF755 for near fill.
More about both of these exciting projects will be presented here soon.
A recent sound system upgrade project at the sanctuary of Evangel Assembly of God Church of Bismarck, North Dakota by Tricorne Audio of Fargo provides much-needed performance quality to support music/drama productions, and it also eliminates troublesome dead spots and poor intelligibility presented by the previous system.
Working closely with Brian Hanson and the church sound/music team, Tricorne Audio designed and installed the new system featuring a variety of EAW installation full-range loudspeakers, including three biamplified AX Series loudspeakers flown left-center-right to cover the entire main floor. Three MK2300 Series loudspeakers bolster output to the balcony that runs the length of the sanctuary's back wall, while four EAW Commercial VR61 loudspeakers with transformers handle the shadowed underbalcony.
Tricorne Audio's Dallas Anderson notes that the original system serving the 900-capacity sanctuary, interestingly, was divided into two parts. Two large loudspeakers in a center cluster were dedicated to "music" reinforcement, while horns and bass cabinets in the same cluster were designated for "speech" applications.
In addition to the EAW loudspeakers, Tricorne Audio also specified and integrated premium digital signal processing and power amplification components within the new system. They resourcefully utilized existing microphone jacks, wireless mics, outboard gear and the 40-channel mixing console.
The new monitor system serving the front platform includes an EAW Commercial VR21 loudspeaker flown for the choir as well as four traditional mixes provided via EAW Commerical VRM12 monitors ("Which they really like," notes Anderson). A personal mixing system with six remote mixers is also available.
"The end result is quite nice. We have very even coverage, excellent gain before feedback and a system that can truly handle full contemporary concerts, intimate theatre productions, and, of course, daily worship activities," Anderson concludes.
"The promoter and band were so impressed with the sound that from this point on, they won't use another vendor." - Rafael Jaimes, Audiospectrum
It was sound in the round at its finest in New York's Madison Square Garden, where Audiospectrum recently provided a full 360 degrees of audio reinforcement for a concert by Dominican Republic band Aventura, presenting their unique blend of bachata, hip hop, r&b, and reggaeton for a sold-out crowd of more than 17,000. The show is in support of the wildly popular band's fifth album, KOB Live.
Headed by Rafael Jaimes, Boston-based Audiospectrum is frequently tapped to provide sound reinforcement for concerts and events in Madison Square Garden, and for Aventura, they deployed a total of 52 EAW KF760 Series line array loudspeakers - 40 KF760 and 12 KF761 - to provide front, side and out-fill coverage. Rear coverage came courtesy of dual clusters of venerable EAW KF850z full-range loudspeakers, each in a "2 over 2" configuration.
And talk about low-end energy: Audiospectrum deployed 24 EAW BH760 bent-horn subwoofers. "This rocked the Garden like you would not believe - not only in terms of volume but the overall sound quality of the bass," Rafael says.
"Overall with the sound design, we made absolutely sure sound was in your face throughout the arena, all the way to the last seat in the house," he adds, also noting that both the FOH mix of Ramiro Samper and monitor mix by Peter Sawyer worked perfectly with the sound design in further enhancing the performance.

On the list of unusual installed sound reinforcement situations, the Olympic Oval in Calgary ranks toward the top, as evidenced by a recent project that saw the venue’s original sound system replaced by a widely distributed, multi-zone design to serve a decidedly unconventional indoor arena.
Constructed for the 1988 Winter Olympic Games, the venue offers a structure of pre-cast, pre-stressed concrete that completely covers a 400-meter long-track speed skating oval encircling two international sized ice rinks for short-track speed skating and ice hockey. The long-track is surrounded by a 450-meter running track, with other track and field amenities including a 110-meter sprint track, pole vault box and long jump pit.
Spectator seating for more than 10,000 runs along one of the long sides of the oval, continuing around the curves a good distance, with portable grandstands able to be staged where needed along the hockey rink and short track.
Known as “the fastest ice on earth” for hosting an unprecedented number of speed skating world records (attributed most frequently to its rare status as a climate-controlled venue combined with the effects of high altitude), the Olympic Oval continues to serve as a premier speed skating site and training facility.
In addition, it hosts hockey games, track and field competitions (and practices), and, located adjacent to the University of Calgary, is connected both with that institution in general and specifically with its sports medicine and kinesiology programs. Constantly in use seven days a week, it’s also open at select times for public skating and a wide range of special events.

I’m writing this from the front lounge of the Foreigner crew bus that has been my home for a couple of weeks, and I thought I’d include some pics of the folks working so hard on this traveling show. (Click here to see more photos.) Nine buses, nine 53-foot semi’s and over 50 production and support people.
I’d like to give a shout out to some of the great people who make it happen out here. So, in no particular order: Don Dodge, Robbie Price, Rocko, Gary Luizzo (Styx FOH), Pilgrim (Leppard’s monitor engineer), Alphonso, Dave the bus driver, Dan the truck driver, the FOH Karaoke crew (Ted Bible, Ronan and the lovely Leslie), LD’s Kenji-san, Libby, and Cosmo. And - the Foreigner crew: Jody, John, Roy, Ted and Barry. Sorry in advance if I left anyone out. Rock on, my brothers and sisters.
Foreigner has the opening slot today, and for a bit of a change, they've updated the set list to include “I Wanna Know What Love Is" and "Feels Like The First Time". After the set, the Foreigner crew is driving down to Florida for a corporate gig while Def Leppard is taking a two-day break. So as soon as the gear is packed, it’s a tearful goodbye and then they're off.
I stayed until the end of the show to get the UMX.96 packed and onto Foreigner's truck, and then I’m off with the runner to catch a 7 am flight home. I’ll be catching back up with the tour when it comes to my home town, Las Vegas, in about a week’s time. In the meantime, click the link directly below to check more photos.

I forgot to mention that the last show day was also the anniversary of the Ferrit’s hatching. The Foreigner crew surprised me with a birthday cake! The recording we did at the previous show went very well - the delay established on the UMX.96 outputs to line up the tracks was within two samples, so it was real easy to slip the tracks for perfect sync.
Today was hot and humid, and an afternoon rainstorm didn't help matters. We had the middle slot again, which was lucky since Mick Jones, lead guitar for Foreigner, was flying up from NY and the weather grounded his flight. He landed at the local airport, rushed to the venue and made it with moments to spare! Once again Foreigner played a blistering set and 50 minutes went by just like that.
A bit of drama during the show - Tom Gimbel’s saxophone wireless mic wasn’t working but the onstage crew got the spare up and running before the solo in “Emergency”... and nobody noticed. The stage guys have a whole host of “what-if” procedures planned and it’s almost automatic, like a well-oiled machine, they just “clicked” into place.
We recorded the show again and the 25,000 screaming fans almost overloaded the mic tracks. As a result, the sample rate was upped to 96 kHz, and we also deployed a bigger hard drive.
Another rapid load out (under two hours), and on to Virginia Beach.
A new UX8800 and EAWPilot user forum has just launched on the forums section of EAW.com. The new forum, moderated by Joe Fustolo and Dave Gunness, was created because both UX and Pilot are evolving and maturing at a rapid rate, making it vital that users be well informed, and as completely and quickly as possible. Click here to go to the EAW forums.
A big welcome aboard to Kati Naish, who’s joined the EAW team as Brand Administrative Coordinator. Based in the Woodinville facility, she has a wide range of responsibilities, including overall administrative support, meeting scheduling and planning, marketing project logistics, tradeshow and event planning, rep and distributor support - and just generally keeping the marketing department in line.
Kati offers a great background in administration and marketing, coming to EAW from previous stints at Microsoft as a Corporate Event Manager, as well as serving as a paralegal for a law firm and doing marketing work for a medical staffing company. Other vitals you should know: she plays softball, is a huge Seattle Seahawks fan, and her last name is correctly pronounced “Nash”.

After a quick breakfast we find our way to the FOH position and get the boards set up. Today we're also going to establish a small recording rig - taking a left and right line out from the UMX.96 digital console, along with two ambience mics at FOH. These four tracks are routed to a ProTools LE via a Digidesign interface and a firewire hard drive.
Don sets up a pair of Matrix outputs and assigns Mix L and R to them; a small amount of compression is applied. Using Smaart’s delay locator, the distance from the PA to the mics is found, and this delay is added to the Matrix outputs. Now all four tracks are in sync.
Tomorrow is another day off so we'll get a chance to hear the recorded tracks - I’ll be letting you know how they turned out.

Click on the image at right to view a very cool time-lapse of the complete show build for the recent concert by the London Symphony Orchestra in Daytona Beach, where Stage Audio & Lighting Productions of Longwood, Florida, deployed a system featuring EAW KF Series line arrays and UX8800 digital processing.
The time-lapse video was done by Jeremy Goldstein of i.n.i.t.i.a.l., who works as a much sought after free-lance audio engineer and technician, based in central Florida. Jeremy was on hand to lend his audio talents throughout the week at numerous Daytona performances leading up to the LSO grand finale at the Ocean Center. We'll have more coverage of sound for the event posted here soon. Our thanks to Jeremy for capturing and posting the time-lapse, which is very instructive in showing just how much effort goes into a successful first-class production.

After a day off, we’re all rested and ready to go. Today we have the middle slot, which means that once again we have only 20 minutes for changeover, and the first time Don gets to hear the system through the UMX.96 will be the intro track. How does he make sure that his system EQ is going to work for the room?
The trick is to check in with System Crew Chief Ted Bible and Def Leppard FOH Engineer Rowan McQue to see what’s happening during the system tune. There is an overall system EQ, and then each engineer puts his own personal preference curve, which in the case of the UMX.96 is the built-in RTA31 band available on each output.
Other good news - I think in all the years I’ve played this venue, it’s the first time it didn’t rain! Tomorrow we're going to set up a small recording rig and make a live recording - should be fun, interesting and instructive.

Special Report By Ben Olswang
In addition to being out on the road with Foreigner, another EAW UMX.96 digital console has just been put through its paces at the Capital Hill Block Party in Seattle, where it garnered high praise from all who used it under the most stressful of all mix positions: monitor world. The event also marked another successful run for the new EAW UX8800 digital processor with Gunness Focusing.
The Block Party featured three stages hosting live music, with sound provided by EAW and Mackie components. The main stage system, under the direction of Carlson Audio, offered coverage from two stacks (left and right) of EAW KF750s paired with four SB1000 subwoofers, with processing courtesy of the UX8800. A second, networked UX8800 provided delay lines feeding five towers made up of Mackie SA1232z and SWA2801z covering each of the four streets intersecting the stage.
Also at the main stage, the UMX.96 ran eight stage mixes for EAW NT59 stage monitors, Mackie SA1232z/SWA1801z side fills, and an SA1521z plus SWA2801z combination for drum monitor. All processing was done in the console, including EQ, compressors, and gates on inputs, and limiters and graphic EQs on the outputs. This made load in a breeze - no patching required other than inputs and outputs.
Monitor Engineer Tom Meyers (who’s also a Mackie tech support guru) was at the controls of the console for the whole day through the hot summer sun. It was a true festival with five different bands throughout the day and only a half-hour changeover between acts. Each group was very different, ranging from a two-piece drum and keys combo to a hip-hop act with a full band to a power rock quartet.

EAW's Martyn "Ferrit" Rowe is providing us with live reports as an EAW UMX.96 digital console makes its inaugural tour with Foreigner and FOH Engineer Don Dodge.
Hershey, Pennsylvania
August 12, 2007
Load-in today at Hershey Stadium - Foreigner has the middle slot today, which means we’ve got about 10 minutes to set up and we’re on! The secret is meticulous preparation, and here’s where we get to use the snapshot features of the UMX.96.
During yesterdays performance we captured snapshot’s of the boards state at various parts of the show and during today’s set up we edited them for the system setup which involves extra cabinets from another vendor. I have to admit to being very nervous when 8:10 pm arrived but everything worked like a dream and Foreigner had the 30,000-strong crowd from the first note.
Day off tomorrow, and then we move along to Jones Beach.

Mansfield, Massachusetts
August 11, 2007
Today Foreigner joined up with Styx and Def Leppard, with Foreigner and Styx taking turns to play the opening or middle slot. Today was Foreigner's turn to open. At 4 p.m., after all the semis have unloaded and lights, sound, video and staging crews have done their thing, Def Leppard appears for a soundcheck after a 10-day break.
At about 5, it's time for Foreigner to set up - their stage setup is on rolling risers that have been pre-built backstage. In less than 10 minutes, there's very quick line check, and here’s where the comprehensive channel metering on the UMX.96 comes into play. Don Dodge is able to rapidly confirm visually every channel.
Doors open and at 7 p.m. the intro is rolling. Tonight’s set is a 50-minute version, and before I realize it, it’s over. The crew has 20 minuntes to get Foreigner off and Styx set up (which they manage with a minute to spare).
The Foreigner crew get their truck loaded, and we get to see some of the Def Leppard set before we leave to beat the traffic. Tomorrow: Hershey, PA.

Foxwoods Casino, Connecticut
August 5, 2007
Woke up outside the casino and stumble inside, looking for the Fox Theatre - this place is huge! We are greeted by the Production Manager, Robbie Price, and shown to catering and then it’s time for load in. Surprise - the Foxwoods crew have beat us to it, so everything’s already in, and it’s going to be an easy day. We chat with Steve Gamelin, Lead Audio Tech, and were soon hooked up, with the system purring along.

Once again I find myself giving extended tours of the console (maybe I should charge admission). We do the customary line-check with the roadie band - it’s an old Thin Lizzy tune today, then before I realize it, it’s show time. The band plays a blistering set, Jason seems intent on breaking the drum kit and songs like “Feels Like the First Time” and “Urgent” have the audience up and into the aisles.
After the show tonight we part company with Don and the boys. They're off to do two fly dates without the desk, although “Digital Don Dodge” (D3) looked like he would check the console as baggage if he could take it with him. We meet up again in Boston for a run with Def Leppard and Styx, and I’ll tell you all about it here. (Thanks to Dana Bourke for these fine photos!)

Trump Casino, Atlantic City
August 4, 2007
Today finds us indoors at the Grand Cayman ballroom in “The Donald’s” casino. I thought it would be nice to get in from the weather and humidity today - I live in Vegas where high humidity is low double-digits, but the A/C was so cold I noticed my hands were a little blue.
We actually had a real soundcheck, where the boys - Mick Jones, Jason Bonham, Kelly Hansen, Jeff Jacobs, Tom Gimbel and Jeff Pilson - treated us to an extended medley of Led Zeppelin riffs.
The show was once again a flawless rendition of the hits - “Dirty White Boy” and “Jukebox Hero” amongst others.
Don now seems really at home on the console and is starting to explore some of the extended features, such as the Smaart integration. (Note the photo at the top of this post.)
The Trump Casino A/V crew got us out in record time, and we're off to the Foxwoods Casino. (And a big thanks to Dana Bourke for these excellent photos.)

Senaca Niagara Casino Hotel, Niagara Falls
August 3, 2007
Wake up at about 9:00 am and scramble into the hotel for a quick shower and a spot of breakfast. My hotel room is on the 23rd floor and the view of the Falls is stunning. After I tear my eyes away, I notice a stage far below me in the corner of the parking lot and realize that it's going to be our new temporary home for today.
After setting up the UMX96, I spent about an hour going over the feature-set with various interested parties. I think someone is spreading the word because we even got some people from local sound companies who “heard” that the new EAW console was here and just popped along to have a quick look.
Today’s sound system, supplied by the Seneca Niagara Hotel and manned by their able crew, is an EAW730 rig with SB1000 subwoofers. After a quick system tune Don and his back line crew step through their paces and today’s rendition from the crew band appears to be a blues standard.
The support band finishes up, the intro tape roles and Foreigner storms the stage. It’s during “Cold as Ice” I realize that these aren’t songs- they're anthems, and the 16,000 member audience are not only singing every word but are hanging on every guitar lick and keyboard solo. This puts immense pressure on the house engineer (that would be Don, pictured at right) to faithfully and accurately reproduce this for the audience - you cannot miss a single bit.
The layout of the UMX96, with a fader for every channel, means no hunting through pages to find what you want, everything is right under your fingertips. Another load-out and we're off to Atlantic City.

Charles Ives Center For The Arts, Danbury, CT
August 2, 2007
When we said we were going to do field trials of the UMX.96 console with Foreigner, I had no idea how literal that was. A picturesque meadow with a covered stage (gazebo?) perched in the edge of a lake was going to be our first outing on the current Foreigner World Tour 2007.
The EAW field team of Dana Bourke and myself were on hand to assist veteran FOH Engineer Don Dodge (pictured below) with a transition from analog to digital. After a team of stalwart chappies had hand carried/dragged the console up to the FOH position at about noon, the console was put up on it’s easy-tilt and the cover removed where it attracted a crowd.
A demonstration of the feature set and user interface (the first of many that day) ensued. With the able assistance of the local sound provider, RKE Productions Inc, we were ready to start system tuning by about 2 pm. Don had pre-programmed the board on an earlier visit to Woodinville, so we were ready to commence line-check.
The band instruments were put through their paces and a couple of “standards” were bashed out by the roadie band of John Pelligrinelli, Ted Strain and Roy Kelly with Barry Foy on monitors. Later, a capacity crowd of over 3,500 were up on their feet and stayed that way.
This year Jason Bonham is the driving force behind the drum kit, powering the endless succession of hits by Foreigner, and before I realized it , the encores were upon us and then the walk out music was playing.
A beaming Don Dodge accepted a stream of compliments “how great it sounded” from audience members as they passed the mix position. A one-hour load-out and then we piled on to the bus for the next show...

Stage Audio & Lighting Productions of Longwood, Florida is providing a top-shelf sound system, including EAW line arrays and UX8800 processing, for an exclusive "Pops" concert performance by the London Symphony Orchestra this coming weekend (7/28) in Daytona Beach.
Headed by Phil Kovacevich, Stage Audio & Lighting Productions is a leading live event company noted for its work in providing systems and superior technical support to touring and corporate clients. They will be supplying sound reinforcement to the 46,000-square-foot main arena at the Ocean Center in Daytona with a rig featuring EAW KF760 line arrays over KF730 line arrays, all finely tuned via UX8800 processing with Gunness Focusing. EAW's Jamie Anderson will also be on hand to support Stage Audio's efforts, including working with the company on optimization of the system utilizing EAW Smaart v.6.
In addition, a mix of EAW NT56 and NT59 self-powered loudspeakers with Gunness Focusing, as well as NTS22 subwoofers, will be deployed for various smaller events throughout the area, including live performances by string quartets and small ensembles. NT Series loudspeaker might also be utilized for supplemental fill during the main concert.
It’s often noted that audio is not “rocket science.” True enough - unless, of course, it is. Troy Gwin and his team at ACS Sound and Lighting, based in Columbia, S.C., recently took on an “audio as rocket science” challenge presented by the University of Sound Carolina on behalf of Lockheed Martin Corporation and NASA (U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration), utilizing sound reinforcement technology to test a Space Shuttle rocket component.
ACS was tasked with duplicating the acoustic noise conditions found inside of rocket fuel tanks during liftoff, specifically, testing the effects of high sound pressure levels on tiny (less than quarter-inch diameter) acoustic sensors designed by Lockheed Martin to monitor SPL within the tanks.
The test required generating electro-acoustic output (in this case, pink noise) matching a NASA response curve depicting constant SPL above 120 dB at 30 Hz to 10 kHz, with a peak in excess of 135 dB at 400 Hz. This output, conforming to the response curve, needed to be sustained for a period of three minutes at a distance of two feet.
To generate the output, ACS assembled a system comprised of three cart-stacked EAW KF760 large-format line array modules joined by two EAW BH760 horn-loaded subwoofers (a.k.a. “SuperSubs”), with the loudspeakers aimed outdoors through a large back door at the ACS warehouse to avoid slap-back and reverberation generated by wall surfaces. (Troy Gwin and Travis Banks of ACS are shown above right with the rig.)

"New Smaart v.6, simply, is an audio professional's dream come true. Start with the fact that it works natively in Mac OS X - no more lugging around two computers (separate Mac and Windows computers) to project sites!
“It's also extraordinarily fast, the new interface is a lot cleaner and makes the program a breeze to use, while the new ASIO/Core Audio driver compatibility shows forward thinking.
"The kicker to all of this is the ability to acquire unlimited snapshots, the ability to have a combination of any two traces being viewed simultaneously, as well as the new zoom feature. The ultimate tool we've been waiting for has definitely arrived.”

The word on the street regarding the new UX8800: nicely done, and then some. A wide range of users have been involved in beta testing, with reports filed by these audio professionals overwhelmingly positive.
For example, check out the application of UX8800 with a KF750 rig for concerts by Simply Red in Australia, with audio engineer Tim Millikan (pictured at left with UX8800) providing the details and commentary.
And take a look at this recent thread on the Live Audio Board (LAB) of ProSoundWeb, where again, users in the pro audio community who've been involved with beta testing weigh in with their observations, thoughts and comments.
More details on the UX8800 are available here and here.

The new UX8800 4-input x 8-output digital processor has been created expressly to provide revolutionary Gunness Focusing alignment and driver processing algorithms and protection technology to an ever-growing number of conventional EAW loudspeakers. And with true dual-mode capability, the UX8800 operates either as a standard system processor, or, using the uploadable Gunness Focusing settings, as a loudspeaker-specific processor. Get the full scoop here and here.
The UX8800 provides an unprecedented degree of consistency and interoperability between EAW systems. Users can be confident that cross-rented systems will all have the same starting processing settings. And because of Gunness Focusing, that starting point is phenomenal clarity and fidelity.
Another notable aspect is that in its dual role as a comprehensive digital system processor, the UX8800 is intimately linked to EAW Smaart and FChart acoustic measurement and analysis systems. This is crucial to users and engineers in that it guarantees both standard and “Grey Box” processing exactly matches the processor settings determined in the laboratory by EAW engineers.
Again, more details here and here.
The historic Paramount Theatre in downtown Abilene, Texas, a monument to an earlier time of movie palaces and vaudeville performance, now offers the most modern of amenities in the form of a new, dynamic sound reinforcement system designed and installed by Gemini Sound of Dallas that's highlighted by EAW KF730 line arrays as well as EAW JF50S compact loudspeakers and SM200iH stage monitors.
Built in 1930, the beautiful facility's distinctive Spanish-Moorish architecture received a new lease on life with a 1986 renovation that has led to it serving as a true community asset in providing live and motion picture entertainment of many varieties. The restoration and renovation took over six months and won the Paramount the prestigious Texas Award for Historic Preservation from the Texas Historical Commission.
Late last year, Gemini Sound began the process of developing a commensurate sound system for the 1,199-seat theatre, which has a split aisle (no center) configuration with a main floor and a lower, middle, and upper balcony. Jason Litt, backed by Chad Cain, took the lead system design role, working with theatre personnel that included Executive Director Betty Hukill, Artistic Director Barry Smoot and Technical Director Jennifer Lashley.
"We didn't want to utilize a trapezoidal box approach with this design," explains Gemini Sound President Tim Cain. "There were aesthetic and infrastructure issues to address, with a line array design much more capable of eliminating those concerns while also meeting coverage and concert-type performance goals. The KF730 Series furthers this with its very compact size-to-output ratio, and its sonic signature is excellent."

The B4 Roadshow tour bus pulled up in the outskirts of Paris at the premises of Axente, France, close to Orly airport. The weather was cool and windy, which did not bode well for the next day's Bootcamp and Tradeshow.
Paris was the only destination on the tour that gave us the opportunity to actually hold the roadshow at the distributor's premises. In this case the Bootcamp was held in the massive car park of Axente and parent company Impact Evenement.
This gave us for the first time, the opportunity of setting up the systems the day before we opened to the public, although the speed with which the scaffold towers went up did make us think that spare day could easily get
used up!

Leading up to the B4 Roadshow stop in Barcelona, we'd been hearing that attendance would be especially strong. But we were totally blown away with just how many audio professionals came - and stayed - for both full days.
System Bootcamp and Tradeshow was held in a venue plenty big to accommodate everyone and then some. The site, Velòdrom D'Horta, a bicycle racetrack built for the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games, was ideal to provide full-fledged demos of KF760 Series line arrays, the new SB1002 flying subwoofers, the coming-soon UMX.96 live digital mixing console and more. (The rig and venue are shown above.)
And in what must be at least close to a record, Smaart School attracted more than 60 attendees! With so many audio professionals wishing to learn about recently released Smaart v.6 as well as solid test and measurement principles, we definitely could accommodate the crowd. A bit of reconfiguring, some great work by EAW distributor Pro 3 & Co., and everything worked out just fine.
A lot of people, a lot of learning, and even more fun. Now it's on to Paris for the final stop of the European leg of B4! (Click on the link below for more images from Barcelona.)

EAW has named Scott Pizzo to the position of Director, U.S. Sales, with the appointment announced by Jeffrey Cox, Vice President of the EAW Brand Group.
Scott brings 20-plus years of pro audio experience to the position, where he will lead the company’s overall sales efforts in addition to directing EAW’s team of 17 U.S.-based independent sales rep firms. He will be based at theWhitinsville offices.
Scott joined EAW nearly five years ago as a member of the technical sales team working in the install, touring and retail channels with the company’s sales rep network. Previously he held a position in Technical Sales for Lexicon, and prior to that, he worked as an independent sound engineer.
“During his tenure with EAW, Scott has consistently demonstrated great responsiveness in serving the needs of our growing customer base,” Jeffrey noted. “His in-depth understanding of the market and technology are also a huge asset both for the company and our customers.” (Click here for more about Scott.)
U.K.-based Peak Sound and Light has recently chosen to invest in EAW KF730 Series SLAM line arrays (16 KF730 full-range modules and eight SB730 subwoofers) as the latest addition to the Cheltenham-based lighting and sound rental company’s inventory.
“I’ve been a big fan of EAW for a number of years, and when the need for a new system arose, my first thoughts turned to the SLAM (Small Line Array Module) system from EAW,” says Karl Ashman, managing director of Peak. “The company and products have always impressed me.”
Peak selected the KF730 Series primarily due to its scalability and modular design, as Karl explains. “As a company we work on a wide variety of events – everything from a small conference to large outdoor events – the system we have bought will give us the capability to cover all of the events we work on.”
Peak's new KF730 arrays are shown in the two photos with this post, serving the recent "Making our Mark" event in London. For more about this application, as well as photos of another recent Peak application of the rig and additional commentary, click on the link directly below.

Day Two of the B4 Roadshow stop in Milan featured well-attended System Bootcamp and Tradeshow sessions. The range of current and coming-soon EAW products drew crowds, and in particular, the UMX.96 live digital mixing console. (Moray is shown at left providing a console demo.)
Exhibo, S.P.A., the EAW distributor for Italy, did a fantastic job in handling the numerous (numerous!) details it takes to pull off a successful B4 presentation. Our sincerest thanks to them for their hard work. The B4 site - Alcatraz Music Island - is a noted live music venue in downtown Milan, and it worked out great. As expected, the acoustics were conducive to effective audio presentations. Now, on to Barcelona! (Click on the link below for more Milan images.)

Exhibo S.p.A., EAW's distributor for Italy, provided expert support in the deployment of EAW LS432 line source loudspeakers and JF50 compact loudspeakers to supply highly intelligible sound reinforcement for the Galileo Awards, held recently in Padua, Italy.
The prestigious event, honoring scientific inquiry and literature, was fittingly held at the historic Palazzo della Ragione in Padua, the town that is the site of Galileo's observatory in the early 1600's when he helped complete an astronomical revolution.
Further, Palazzo della Ragione is one of the most important ancient buildings of the European Age of Commons, constructed starting in 1218. The beautiful hall, measuring 82 meters (270 feet) long and 27 meters (85 feet) wide, has a roof shaped as a reversed hull, with hard surfaces abounding. A tough acoustical situation, to say the least, and one that the sound team worked carefully to tame with a distributed sound design featuring the LS432 and JF50 loudspeakers mounted on stands throughout the listening area.

The B4 Roadshow team arrived in Milan, Italy around
1 pm, and upon figuring out that our hotel was near the famous Monza Motor Raceway, we set out on what we thought would be a quick stroll over to see it.
I should mention here that Bernie is a huge racing fan (shown here with Ferrit at a statue at the track), so for him this was more like a pilgrimage. After about and hour and a half of walking, it started to feel like Gilligan's Island to the rest of us: "A three-hour tour, a three-hour tour..."
Actually, we ended up walking though the Monza city park and it was absolutely gorgeous. We saw the Royal Palace at Monza, built by the Hapsburgs in 1777, and then, the location where the last king of Italy, Umberto I, was assasinated in 1900. We also saw some interesting art in the park that the boys promptly named "The Wicker Bundt Cake." (Pretty accurate description, according to the photo at left.)

Pop divas the Sugababes have just completed a concert tour of the UK, Ireland and Europe to promote their new release Overloaded, with the EAW KF760 Series-led PA provided by top-flight UK-based touring company Concert Sound.
The tour appeared in a range of venues offering different sizes and configurations, dictating a flexible system approach. The largest iteration of the system, deployed at London's Wembley Arena, included 14 KF760 full-range line array modules and three KF761 wide coverage modules per side, joined by six KF750 full-range concert loudspeakers, three KF755 downfill loudspeakers and 12 SB1000 subwoofers on each side.
Supplemental coverage came courtesy of medium-format KF300 loudspeakers for infill and compact JF80 for lipfill. Loudspeaker processing and control was provided by XTA DP448s and DP226s which were operated via XTA AudioCore software and a WISER wireless network. (All photos with this post were provided by Aron Ross of Concert Sound, who served as system technician for the tour. Thanks Aron! Also, our thanks to Gasoline Media for their editorial contributions.)
Professional audio industry veteran Joe Fustolo has been named Manager of the EAW Application Support Group (ASG), the multifaceted team offering a wide range of specialized technical services to the EAW customer base. The B4 Roadshow team set off from Wolfach in the morning and drove south through the Black Forest and into the Swiss Alps. Absolutely gorgeous.
We didn't have an actual destination or any hotel reservations, but thanks to Bluetooth technology,we were able to hook into the Internet from the bus. Wiith Moray translating into Italian, we were able to find a hotel with six rooms available at the last minute. (May 1 is a national holiday in Italy so most everything was booked.)
The hotel is in a little town called Ispra, on Lake Maggiore in the Lombardy region of Italy. It took about eight hours to get there, as well as some expert driving from Werner as he navigated our 48-foot tour bus through mountain passes and narrow Italian hillside streets.

On the bus
One of those memorable moments: 12:45 pm and everyone is upstairs in the rear lounge watching the Bourne Identity. Moray is sleeping in his bunk. I came down to watch the drive for a bit, and as I came down the stairs I could hear a bit of whistling coming from the forward cabin. It’s a bright balmy, lovely afternoon and we’ve just passed immigrations into Switzerland. We’re motoring down the Bahn, passing through the entrance into the Alps. It’s gorgeous, a storybook day.
I sat down in the forward/lower lounge and could hear Werner, our intrepid and wonderful driver (every bit Austrian) whistling along with something. Delightful, delicate, precise, joyful whistling. Not like passive, mumbling, meandering whistling, but flutelike, percussive, trilling Alpine whistling.
Suddenly he turns up his stereo in the driver’s compartment and I realize he’s whistling along with a classical concert on the stereo. Not just some soft, sweet, beautiful concert piece, but one of those Austrian masterpieces, loaded with flourish, undoubtedly written on just such a spring afternoon, where the sun bathes the countryside in clear light and the new leaves on the trees radiate a green that we only get to see in April in the mountains. The panorama is actually postcard.
So I sit quietly, slide down in a lounge recliner and watch with wonderment as the Swiss countryside glides by in a rolling slideshow of hills and church spires, cows and fences, chalets and Swiss flags, yellow mustard fields erupting in full voice, punctuating the rise and fall of Werner’s whistling concerto. He’s hitting every note. He knows this piece. As the concert rises to crescendo, Werner pushes his participation, steadfastly remaining part of the orchestra. Big Finish! Wow!! That was cool…
People can be so happy, so positive.
Life is good. Really good.

On our way via the tour bus to Milan for the next stop of the B4 Roadshow, we stopped for the evening in Wolfach, Germany. All I can say is WOW - this place unbelievably gorgeous! It's a 1,000-year-old walled city on the Kinsig river. I can't really describe how lovely it is, so check out the pictures.
Besides that, it's Jurgen's hometown, and he and his wife Christiane hosted us for a great day of sightseeing and dinner.

Day two of the B4 Roadshow stop in Cologne was Smaart School day, and Jamie and Ferrit had a full class of 17 people at the Gahrens and Batterman training academy.
A huge thanks to G&B for letting us use their facility! (It's pictured below.)
While Jamie and Ferrit busily made the world a little "Smaarter" (sorry!), Bernie and Moray headed over to the Cologne Arena to visit Marcus from Gahrens and Batterman as they loaded in a huge corporate event for DHL, utilizing a KF730-based system.

The DJP facility in Cologne (shown at left), site of this stop of the B4 Roadshow, was a great old factory which used to make boilers for steam engines. And, although cool to look at… it also came with about 7 seconds of reverb at 125 hz. That was cause for incredulous gasps from the group gathered around Jamie’s Smaart rig.
Bad for sound, but it sure makes a pretty Smaart screen. True to form, Jamie and the guys managed to make the best of the venue and get the rig sounding good.
So what do a bunch of audio guys do when they have a giant old factory, some empty roadcases and time on their hands? Invent the sport of case-luging, of course! Jamie also tried a little case surfing. We were working hard… honest!

After a much needed change of clothes and some well-earned beers, the B4 Roadshow crew hopped on our tour bus, and with our trusty driver Werner at the wheel, took off for Cologne, Germany. Much merriment was had that first night on the bus… Most of which I can’t post on the web.
But suffice to say it included Moray, Ferrit and Steve practicing their moose mating calls (see picture above) learned the night before from a pair of comely, and drunk, Swedish gals.
We crossed from Dover to Calais on the ferry sometime around midnight, and after a meal of ship-food and a really bad nap on hard plastic ferry chairs, we landed on the continent about 2 AM. At left we see Ferrit passing his new remote controlled Dalek to Bernie. (Doctor Who fans know what we're talking about.)
Then everyone hit their bunks, and tried to learn how to sleep on a moving, swaying bus. Someone’s Blackberry alarm went off around 6:30 AM and beeped incessantly for the next 90 minutes. Thus instigating the “cell phones off in the bunk area” rule.
We pulled into the DJP facility in Cologne at about 9:00 in the morning, and met Jurgen, our German Sales Manager. The venue was a great old factory, which used to make the boilers for steam engines. More about this venue in my next post...
As we were all a little sleepy and bus-ruffled, Jurgen met us there with a car full of coffee and Marcus, Uli who helped us load in. Big thanks guys! (Jurgen's "coffee car" is shown below.)

The EAW team had a great time this week presenting the first B4 Roadshow at Bray Studios outside of London. After a full day of Smaart School followed by another full day of System Bootcamp and the EAW Tradeshow, it was time to go. In road-dog fashion, the team broke it all down, loaded it all on the truck, and then boarded the bus to move along to the next B4 Roadshow stop: Cologne, Germany.
Some final notes on the England stop from Karen Anderson: Bray Studios is a great film studio out in the English countryside near Windsor Castle. The facilities were wonderful and the staff could not have been nicer. Big thanks to Nathan Hendricks and everyone at Bray. Highly recommended for anyone looking to do a large format demo in England.
Load-in was relatively painless with the help of four of our pals from Concert Sound, and big high fives to them for all of their help.. not only during load in, but on the Roadshow in general. Couldn’t have done it without them!
With the help of more fine folks from Peak Sound and Concert Sound, who stuck around after the Tradeshow to help us load out, we were torn down and had the truck loaded in less than two hours! Everyone pitched in…. as evidenced by the pictures of Jeffrey and Sean (Martin) humping crates up into the truck. Who says execs don’t get their hands dirty?

While the congregants of Olive Baptist Church in Pensacola, Florida, are still enjoying their beautiful worship center built more than a decade ago, the sound reinforcement system has been significantly improved to better serve a myriad of needs, headlined by the addition of a wide range of EAW loudspeakers, including KF730 Series line arrays.
Bobby Taylor of leading systems provider All Pro Sound, Pensacola, worked closely with the Olive Baptist Audio-Video Specialist Kelly Ward to develop the new system. Primary focus was on implementing new loudspeaker technology within the worship center, which offers two levels surrounding the front platform in a fan-shaped configuration, with seating for almost 5,000. (Ward and Taylor are shown below, flanking Olive Baptist Worship Leader Dr. Leo Day.)
Two new EAW KF730 compact line arrays serve as the centerpiece of a left-center-right (LCR) loudspeaker approach. The original loudspeakers were retained to provide left and right output, with the critical center channel handled by dual arrays comprised of eight KF730 boxes. In between these two full-range arrays is another single array made up of four EAW SB730 flying subwoofers.

Day two of the B4 Roadshow in England featured System Bootcamp, led by EAW Technical Training Manager Bernie Broderick, as well as the EAW Tradeshow, where everyone got a look at current and coming-soon products and technologies. The Bray Studios facility (shown here) proved exceptional for hosting both of these facets.
Interesting notes from EAW Marketing Director Karen Anderson: "Andrew Rowan owns SurgeSound, the EAW distributor for South Africa, and he came all the way up from there for the event. And Terje Engedahl is from Lyd-Systemer, our distributor for Norway. He brought two of his customers all the way from Norway (his customers are Eivind Boganes and Oyvind Aasen).
Attendees also had plenty of opportunities to network and get the most up-close looks at all products, including SB Series subwoofers and KF Series line arrays shown here.

Long-time EAW user Carlson Audio of Seattle is providing the sound reinforcement system and experienced support for the current concert tour by Billboard chart toppers Modest Mouse, with the system headlined by EAW KF760 Series line arrays. The tour just kicked off last week and is currently crossing the U.S. and Canada before heading on to Europe for an extensive set of dates.
Carlson Audio, headed by company founder Mark Carlson, has dispatched veteran sound engineer Allan Bagley (shown at left) to serve as head system tech, where he rides herd over a rig that varies from show to show due to the diverse styles of venues being visited by the tour. Generally, the flown main arrays are made up of several KF760 full-range line array modules above two to three KF761 specialized downfill/wide dispersion modules that help meet coverage needs at the front of the audience areas.
"The KF760 rig is doing its usual fine job of meeting and exceeding whatever full-range coverage needs that happen to come up along the way," Bagley noted during system setup prior to a sold-out show at Chicago's Auditorium Theatre. The system is enhanced with EAW SB1000 dual-18-inch-loaded subwoofers as well as compact EAW loudspeakers placed at the front of the stage when needed to offer additional front-fill to the very first rows. Further, venerable EAW KF850 full-range loudspeakers are supplying stage fill.

A new Smaart Forum has launched at the EAW.com Forums section, and in fact, it's already logged 200-plus posts from the Smaart community!
The new Smaart Forum replaces the previous online effort that served very well but had become outdated. Particularly with the recent launch of new EAW Smaart v.6, the new forum is proving invaluable as an efficient way to get questions answered as well as for the sharing of information among the user base.
The forum is expertly moderated by EAW's Calvert Dayton, Martin "Ferrit" Rowe, Joe Fustolo and Scott Jordan. In addition, great input is also provided by Smaart and test/measurement/analysis veterans. Click here to check it out.
Design/build firm John Lyons Systems recently completed a professional audio design at the world’s first Martini Park located at The Shops at Legacy in Plano, Texas, with EAW loudspeakers used in abundance.
Designed by world-class architect Jeffrey Beers, the 7,500-square-foot Martini Park seats a total of 500 patrons and offers seating choices in the Main bar as well as three other dining and lounging areas – the Stage bar for live music performances, the elevated Round bar and the casual Patio bar.
Martini Park owner Christopher Barish turned to John Lyons Systems to provide the audio - as well as video and lighting - systems for the unique space. (Barish and nightlife impresario Lyons had previously worked together on Barish’s Light nightclub at the Bellagio in Las Vegas, also utilizing EAW loudspeakers.)
Lyons notes: “Because Martini Park is a high-end, sophisticated bar for the 21-plus crowd, it was important that the sound system provide clarity at a reasonable SPL. The sound needed to envelope the crowd but not be so deafeningly loud as to drive people away. In addition, the sleek lines of the interior design meant that the sound system needed to blend in with the décor and essentially become invisible.”

The Leeuwin Estate Summer Concert is an annual highlight of Australia’s cultural calendar, featuring a top musical artist performing in a beautiful open-air concert setting outside the small town of Margaret River. The Leeuwin Estate being a winery (and a very good one by the way) makes the event quite nice indeed, with talent that is top shelf as well. Sting, Ray Charles, Tom Jones are some of the featured performers of past concerts, and this year, Simply Red took the stage for two consecutive nights in front of audiences numbering 14,000 each show.
I had the opportunity to support the long-time sound company for the event, Audex Concert Sound of Northbridge, West Australia, fulfilling the role of chief systems engineer. My duties included implementing the new EAW UX8800 digital processor in its maiden voyage on a live show, along with aligning, tuning and anything else related to getting the system ready for Gary Bradshaw, Simply Red’s front-of-house engineer. (Click here for more information about the UX8800)
Audex Concert Sound does an excellent job – supplying gear of the highest quality and audio people to match. Joining company owner Keith Crammond were Alan Thompson (FOH assistant), Ryan Fallis (monitor rigger) and Dave Keys (general audio assistant). Meanwhile, my own experience with professional audio is diverse and dates back about 25 years, from all stripes of work to recording to broadcast to live sound. Now working as an audio engineer with Production Audio Services based in Blackburn, Victoria, my preference lies with live FOH and broadcast.

Sydney, Australia-based system provider DJ Warehouse (DJW) recently completed an extensive project at the Sobar nightclub of the Cremorne Hotel, utilizing a wide range of EAW loudspeakers that highlight the exceptional depth of the EAW line. (Thanks to Production Audio Services, EAW's distributor in Australia, for this report.)
Located on Sydney’s Lower North shore, the hotel faced tough noise restrictions due to a high-rise apartment block directly on top of the planned nightclub. Some of the obstacles DJW confronted were structural vibration paths, thin ceilings and many escape routes for airborne vibrations. EAW loudspeakers chosen by DJW in overcoming these challenges include DSA250 (Digitally Steerable Arrays), KF730 compact line arrays and highly innovative CP621 concentric array ceiling loudspeakers.
Meanwhile, the majority of low-frequency energy is delivered by a custom-built concrete sub column containing six EAW SBX220 subwoofers. This unique design and configuration enabled the DJW tech team to tightly focus much of the sub signal onto the dance floor.
Anderson Audio of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania has added 20 EAW KF760 Series line array loudspeakers to its diverse audio system inventory. The new KF760 full-range and KF761 down-fill modules are capable of providing high-impact sound reinforcement for arena and stadium applications.
In addition, Anderson Audio has further bolstered its concert sound capabilities with the addition of 16 EAW SB1000 double-18-inch subwoofers. All of these new components join EAW KF730 compact line array loudspeakers as well as EAW JF80 compact loudspeakers and EAW SM200 stage monitors already in the company’s inventory.

At NSCA Expo '07 in Orlando this week, EAW is unveiling the latest phase of its education initiative: B4 - "BEYOND Brains, Boxes & Beyond".
Based upon the highly successful B3 education sessions presented to hundreds of audio professionals in 2006, the B4 Roadshow indeed goes well beyond that landmark effort. EAW’s renowned training and educational staff – offering decades of collective real-world pro audio experience – is traveling the world in 2007, conducting more than 20 in-depth (and hands-on) training sessions.
Throughout NSCA Expo, the education team will be in the EAW demo room providing a preview of what will be offered at every B4 stop. Note that these presentations will be done on the "even" hours - 10 am, noon, 2 pm and
4 pm.
Each actual two- and three-day B4 event will feature a full day of Smaart training followed by “System Bootcamp” where attendees are to be provided with diverse live and installed audio coursework as well as a step-by-step overview of configuring, rigging, powering, processing and tuning a full-scale EAW sound reinforcement system.
And, where applicable, training is also being provided on exciting new EAW products such as the UX8800 digital processor providing Gunness Focusing for an ever-growing list of current EAW loudspeakers. Attendees are introduced to other new EAW developments including the UMX.96 digital live console, SB1002 flyable subwoofers, EAW Commercial CAM Series mixer-amplifiers and CXA Series power amplifiers, and more. It’s all topped off with a demonstration of EAW’s latest technologies and products in action, including a “traveling tradeshow” of the latest EAW and EAW Commercial installation products.
More information, including a schedule of B4 Roadshow events, will be posted here and on EAW.com soon.
A recent concert by venerable rock band Foreigner at the Emerald Queen Casino (EQC) I-5 in Tacoma, Washington entertained a sold-out crowd of more than 2,500 - and the show was heard via an EAW UMX.96 Digital Live Console (pdf) in its first-ever public application. By the way, it passed with flying colors!
The UMX.96 was patched into a house system at the EQC I-5 Showroom that also features EAW KF850z Series concert loudspeakers in a design provided by Carlson Audio of Seattle. Foreigner Front-Of-House Engineer Don Dodge (shown in the accompany photos at the board) took the helm and quickly got comfortable with the layout and functionality of the UMX.96, with EAW's Martyn "Ferrit" Rowe on hand to provide support, joined by Ben Olswang and Dana Bourke as well as Jeffrey Cox, VP of the EAW Brand Group.
"Don had spent a bit of time with the UMX prior to the show, and had built some of his mix into it," reports Ferrit. "So certainly by the end of soundcheck at the show, he was quite comfortable and confident in the board, its operation and capabilities. And as the show went on, you could see that comfort level only increase."
The UMX.96 also provided an exciting preview of its multifaceted capabilities, supplying all onboard effects for the show as well. The only exception proved to be one outboard unit patched in to generate an exceptionally long effect on a couple of Foreigner songs.
"We were 'taking the temperature' of the UMX, so to speak, and it passed with flying colors," Ferrit adds. "The board proved very easy to set up and understand, and it functioned seamlessly - there wasn't a single 'hiccup' in the entire show. It was great to hear the compliments directed Don's way by several people, particularly in regard to the sound quality."
The new UMX.96 digital mixing console re-defines performance benchmarks, offering more power, control and integration than any digital live console on the market today. With its open-ended architecture and next-generation processing, the UMX.96 is nothing less than an integrated live sound control system, providing end-to-end control of the signal chain.
A recent two-day ministry outreach by Nicky Cruz in Sydney, Australia drew thousands to Acer Arena, served by a large-scale sound system provided by Norwest Productions that featured an impressive collection of loudspeakers highlighting the depth and versatility of the EAW KF Series line. And, the event also served as a demo of the soon-coming EAW UX8800 digital processor outfitted with Gunness Focusing technology.
The large-scale system consisted of a mix of KF760/761 line arrays as well as KF730small line arrays, KF750 full-range concert system and SB1000 subwoofers. Expertly put together by Norwest Productions, working closely with the event sound designer, these components provided their usual top-notch performance in supplying dynamic coverage to the entire 21,000-plus capacity arena.
But the biggest news was the UX8800 evaluation. EAW's James Bamlett, on hand with the new EAW processors, provides this first-hand account: "The sound designer and system engineer agreed to allow the running of one side of the KF760's on the UX8800's on the morning of the second show. The other side was processed on premium processing units, and had been tuned for the show. It was sounding very good as it was, and the designer was very pleased with the system."

In 2006, sound company Consorcio Audiovisa S.A de C.V. of Mexico City supplied and supported a large-scale rig featuring EAW KF730 compact line arrays as well as EAW SB1000 subwoofers for Festival Internacional Ollin Kan 2006. The lively music festival, held in Zocalo, the main square in Mexico City, offered performances by diverse artists from Mexico, Europe and South Africa.
Consorcio Audiovisa S.A. de C.V., owned by José Luis and Alex Morales and an EAW ELAN member company, deployed main arrays made up of KF730 modules to the left and right of the large stage, with SB1000 sub stacks beneath each array. Two more KF730 arrays were posted to the very far left and right of the stage to bolster coverage to the extremely wide audience area. In total, the system was comprised of 48 KF730 modules and 24 SB1000 subwoofers.
"There are numerous things to like about KF730's, starting with their great response," explains Alex Morales. "They provide huge SPL from such small boxes, so the size-to-power relationship is outstanding. Further, the mid/high signature is excellent. KF730's are also very easy to transport due to their compact size and low weight, and they're really easy to fly. Finally, there is the advantage of connection versatility and the impedance relationship, where we're able to drive four boxes with one power amplifier."
Morales adds that Consorcio Audiovisa was selected to provide sound for the festival because of its reputation for excellent service and equipment, and the KF730 has played a significant role in that strategy. "The KF730 has helped us enhance the events we work, and has opened doors to expand our client base. I'm also happy to report that we have already been invited to return to provide sound at this same festival in 2007."

The first-ever U.S. concert by legendary Italian composer Ennio Morricone, who recently received an Academy Award for his film score work, was held at New York City's famed Radio City Music Hall with sound reinforcement supplied by Audiospectrum. The Boston-based sound company chose to deploy its EAW KF760 Series line arrays for the sold-out concert, which featured Morricone (probably best known for the iconic score for The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly) conducting a 200-piece orchestra on the Radio City stage.
The Audiospectrum team, headed by Rafael Jaimes, put together a system offering dual arrays comprised of 10 KF760 modules above dual KF761 modules that provided wider coverage for the front seating regions. A dozen EAW SB1000z concert subwoofers were stacked to each side, with several EAW JFX260 compact loudspeakers posted on stage for supplemental front fill.
"The room presents many challenges - a limited amount of rigging points, with these points also very close to walls and seats right underneath them, as well as an LED wall that can block the arrays and a mixing position under a low balcony," explains Jaimes. "Despite it all, we addressed every challenge and came up with solutions that resulted in excellent reinforcement." Fine tuning of the system within the space was done with an assist from the EAW Smaart tuning and optimization platform. (By the way, Audiospectrum recently added several more KF760 modules to its inventory. Click here to find out more about the company.)
At the recent 2007 National Hockey League (NHL) All-Star Game, Gemini Sound of Dallas was called upon to provide a full-scale concert sound reinforcement system - headed by EAW KF760 Series line arrays - in support of several live music performances.
The event, held at the American Airlines Center arena in Dallas, was highlighted by two fully stocked stages that actually lowered from the ceiling to the hockey rink playing surface during the game’s period breaks for mini-concerts by country act The Wreckers (featuring Michelle Branch and Jessica Harp) and emerging alternative rockers Red Jumpsuit Apparatus.
Gemini Sound emerged from a competitive field as the choice of the NHL to provide sound reinforcement and support for the event, with company president Tim Cain and his team formulated a dynamic main system based upon EAW KF760 line arrays, with two arrays covering the two “sides” of the arena joined by single arrays to handle each “end.” (One of the "end" arrays and two of the "side" arrays can be seen in the photo above, with the existing house loudspeakers clustered above the scoreboard.)

Sound Systems Plus, a Halifax, Nova Scotia-based A/V solution company, recently provided sound reinforcement for the QEII Excellence in Research Dinner, deploying its EAW KF730 line arrays as well as NT Series self-powered loudspeakers featuring Gunness Focusing.
The annual fundraiser, recognizing outstanding achievement in health research, was held at the newest event venue in Halifax, the Cunard Centre, and featured live entertainment for a crowd of more than 1,000. Dave Corkum, president of Sound Systems Plus, also served as the sound designer for the show, utilizing KF730 arrays and NT Series loudspeakers to supply all coverage.
“The system sounded flawless," Corkum reports. "The NT Series worked as an important part of a perfect solution to provide quality sound to every seat in the house.” Sound Systems Plus provides Atlantic Canada with sales, service, rentals and installation of sound, lighting and audio/visual products. The 800-seat Meng Concert Hall at the beautiful new Performing Arts Center at California State University, Fullerton, features a high-end sound reinforcement system designed by Multi-Media Consulting Inc. (MMC) of Los Angeles that is headed by EAW AX Series loudspeakers and SB Series subwoofers.
MMC Founding Principal Rick Wells took the lead role in the system design process, specifying three sets of dual EAW AX366 loudspeakers to provide seamless full-range coverage. They're flown in a "one above the other" configuration at carefully selected positions above the front edge of the room's large stage, and each set is joined by a single EAW SBX220 subwoofer. All loudspeaker cabinets are painted with a custom color carefully selected to blend in with the aesthetics of the space.
Wells, who's firm provides full-service media systems design and consulting, selected the AX Series loudspeakers for this prestigious project following an extensive demo process that included numerous leading competitive loudspeaker models. MMC also supplied system designs for several other live performance spaces housed within the venue.
Criss Niemann of Audio Geer contributed valuable input at the early stages of the design, with expert system installation by GroggWorks Inc. of San Diego. Thanks to Alan Geer for supplying the photos here that do a fine job of displaying the loudspeakers and their configuation within the concert hall.
