Header

The KF730 Series is comprised of a small three-way line array module (KF730) and matching small subwoofer (SB730) that fits seamlessly within array structures. These elements provide extremely high output from an exceptionally compact footprint, making them ideal for a wide range of portable and installed applications, including touring/festivals, corporate A/V, performing arts and theatre venues, larger churches, and live clubs.

The KF730 full-range system, which we’ve nicknamed SLAM (Small Line Array Module), packs a six-driver, horn-loaded KF Series design into its enclosure. A full-sized mid/high horn fills the entire face of the enclosure, loaded with dual 7-inch MF cones and dual 1-inch-exit HF compression drivers.

By designing the horn mouth to fit the entire face of the compact module, exceptional 110-degree broadband horizontal pattern control throughout the MF/HF passband is attained. Horizontal pattern control extends into the LF passband as well, courtesy of EAW’s proprietary Phase Aligned LF design extends horizontal pattern control into the LF.

EAW engineers determined that if dual 10-inch LF cones were mounted on the sides of a KF730 enclosure that held the MF/HF horn proposed above, driver spacing would extend horizontal pattern control well into the LF range. During development, the look of the LF section did prove a little different, but extensive listening tests backed by measurement proved the theory.

With many features adapted from the KF760 Series, SLAM is simple to use, and arrays can be scaled to cover audiences from 50 to several thousand people. The basic approach to array design is simple: vary the angle between modules to focus or disperse output. A fairly flat arc across a number of modules maximizes line array effects, generating increased output for greater throw distances.

As modules are added beneath to cover the near field, an increasing amount of curvature tempers the output for shorter throw distances. The nearest listeners can be right under the array and still enjoy natural reproduction at a comfortable level while the farthest can be hundreds of feet away and get the same performance.

A bi-amplified powering configuration (passive mid/high) reduces total system cost and complexity. Both the LF and passive MF/HF section are nominal 16 ohm loads, meaning that eight modules can be powered at 2 ohms by a single two-channel amp.

Signal processing requirements for the arrays are intentionally simple, allowing users to draw upon intuitive system-tuning techniques such as adjusting box-to-box angles or EQ settings to achieve desired sound quality.

Headlining the processing is EAW’s revolutionary Gunness Focusing alignment and driver processing algorithms, available via the EAW UX8800 dual-mode digital processor. Gunness Focusing eliminates the traditional characteristics of “honk” and “splashiness” to produce horn-loaded performance comparable to premium direct-radiating studio monitors.

EAWPilot control software provides comprehensive DSP control of the UX8800, while its Wizard modeling software helps in automatically configuring array DSP for optimal performance fitting specific audience areas, greatly simplifying system setup and alignment.

Wizard’s capability also extends to providing the user with input on building optimum array structures and selecting correct pick-points on the array flybars for a given array configuration (Wizard is also available as a stand-alone program for those not utilizing UX8800 processors.)

The integral rigging system features structural high-strength aluminum to meet the weight goals, strong enough to hang a 15-module array. After completing the design using a solid modeling program, EAW engineers utilized Finite Element Analysis software to conduct virtual pull tests that provided invaluable information in furthering the integrity of the rigging.

Users can quickly and easily construct vertical arrays ranging from 4 to 18 enclosures. The size and configuration of a KF730 Series array defines its vertical coverage. In most cases, choosing the correct points on the multi-position fly bar will aim the array, although some radically angled configurations will require pull back using an inverted fly bar.

The rigging system permits box-to-box angles of 12, 6, 3, and 1.5 degrees, while always keeping module faces contiguous. Under normal conditions, easily hung arrays can cover listening areas ranging from approximately +10 degrees to –70 degrees along the vertical axis. SLAM also permits radical array configurations that can cover any vertical angle.

The SB730 high-powered subwoofer designed can fly above or stack below KF730 modules. It contains two advanced 12-inch woofers mounted in a “clamshell” driver arrangement, which provides tight driver coupling to increase output. A massive port radiates the considerable energy needed at the enclosure’s tuning frequency to complement the KF730’s output.

Compact enclosures mean that SLAM systems require a minimum of truck space. With a traveling footprint of just 28.5 by 17.6 by 13 inches, almost any packing scheme will work. Optional road cases are available.

Compact. High output. Superior sonic performance. Easy to transport. Simple, stable rigging. The KF730 SLAM might be small, but it packs a high-end professional punch

The KF760 Series is one of professional audio’s most utilized line array systems with good reason. A combination of smartly applied leading-edge technologies in just the right package makes all the difference.
