EAW Patented Radial Phase Plug™ Technology
The distance from a cone transducer's voice coil to its dustcap
is shorter than the distance from the voice coil to either the
cone or edge surround. Therefore, the energy radiating from
the dustcap will lead the energy from the rest of the transducer.
Traditional phase plug designs have isolated this energy and
routed it through a longer path instead of integrating the energy
from the cone or edge surround. In the process, this kind of
phase plug fails in its attempts to equalize the time arrival
differences because of the circular phase plug entrances and
exits. The primary reason is a loss of control over the direction
of energy. By using a circular phase plug slots, a dramatic
narrowing of beamwidth can occur as the frequency increases.
Thus, the directivity narrows to the point where it no longer
fills the mouth of the horn, leaving holes in the upper midrange
frequency response, primarily in the seams between loudspeakers
in an array.
The EAW patented Radial Phase Plug™ attacks the problem at the
source by precisely aligning the transducers cone, dust cap,
and edge surround geometry to maintain temporal unity. The phase
plug utilizes expanding radial slots within a compressing frame.
The radial design lowers the mechanical reactance of the air
load facing the transducer without modifying its directivity.
This combination of elements provide faithful reproduction of
upper midrange without narrowing the beamwidth or producing
temporal smearing. The results are astounding vocal reproduction.
- Solves the temporal problem at the source
- Path lengths through device to listener are substantially
equal
- Results in temporal coherence

- New phase plug uses series of radial slots
- Effectively lowers the mechanical reactance of the
throat
- Does not create a ring radiator
- Preserves the spatial integrity of the original
source
