Bent Bass Horn
Bent Bass Horn

The construction of practical, portable bass horns has always challenged audio designers. This is primarily because wavelengths in the lower octaves are so large (e.g. 22.5 ft / 6.9 m at 50 Hz) that they require a long horn. The challenge to reduce the horn's dimensions without decreasing its length resulted in a common technique that involves "folding" the horn. This technique collapses the physical dimensions of the horn without reducing its length.

Although this decreases the size of the enclosure, it does create other problems in the process - like failure to provide strong, extended, flat response. When normally smoothly curved horns are folded, sharp corners are created at the points of the fold. Unfortunately, the expanding sound wave front does not maneuver well through the corners above certain frequencies, reducing output and increasing distortion through air turbulence. EAW engineers horns that 'bend' instead of fold to allow all frequencies to easily pass without interference. With our bent bass horn technology, the size of the enclosure is minimized without minimizing sound quality and output.
